    Prom 64 - 5.09.14: Berlin PO, Rattle

    Friday, 5 September
    6.30 p.m. – c. 8.35 p.m.
    Royal Albert Hall

    Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances, op. 45

Stravinsky: L'oiseau de feu (complete ballet)

    Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
    Sir Simon Rattle, conductor

In the first of their two BBC Proms this year, Sir Simon Rattle and his Berlin Philharmonic don their dancing shoes and whisk us off to Russia. Via America, in the case of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances: composed on Long Island for the Philadelphia Orchestra, they blend the balletic traditions of the exile Rachmaninov's Russian homeland with jazz influences from his adopted home, the United States. After the interval, there's authentic Russian ballet and fairytale in Stravinsky's breakthrough work about the magical Firebird.

Apologies for the first bit of the BBC hype. I didn't write it. Honestly. But Rattle should be brilliant in these works.

Yes, it should be a corker. They're opening the BPO Autumn season with the same programme streamed over their excellent live relay system tonight, free if you signed up for it early enough. Seats still available!

I was planning to watch live but Mrs. PG's place of work is having a BBQ tonite and my appearance is mandatory...

Yes, I'll be watching it live via my SMART TV's Berliner Philharmoniker Digital Concert Hall App, to which I have subscribed for 12 months. Or if I do miss it then I hope it appears in their archives.
A concert last year with Lang Lang playing Prokofiev's 3rd Piano Concerto didn't go into the archives - maybe for contractual reasons? Or selling more CDs?

I shall be in the hall for this (a Grand Tier ticket ) and my recorder will most certainly be set.

Anyone here planning to queue for the Arena? I am in the happy position of being able to get there early.

Work calls. Terrible programming , IMO, putting this on a work day. But

Hope the weather is kind , and you get a good spot, KB.

OPEN LETTER TO SIR SIMON RATTLE
(Breathy female voice; accent: Zsa Zsa Gabor)

Simon, mwah! Or rather, SIR Simon! Darling! So its Russian pop classics this year! and The Holy Sebastian...
Oh come on, I'd come to hear you & your band in Three Blind Mice, you know?
But what happened to the fantasy and the boldness? The Ligeti-Wagner-Sibelius thing, I couldn't even sleep! And those 14 Orchestral Pieces without applause, Around the Second Viennese World in a Day, ohmygod my mind was blown, darling, blown!

I think I heard you doing these Rach dances in Berlin, yes? A few years ago now...? Did the Blu-Ray sell well?

So - what are you all doing over there this fall? A Brahms and Schumann cycle, complete and integrale!? Ah... just like the ones on the CDs in their LOVELY packaging, like chocolates!
What do you mean? Of COURSE I bought them darling, I'm a fan! And they are really very, you know, quite good... no, REALLY...

6.30 for the BPO ! it is as if the late night Proms are deliberately being placed on the most inappropriate days

The late night excuse is a red herring. A few years ago there were many late nights when the standard concert was at 7.30 or, VERY occasionally, 7. You used to be asked not to play encores if you were a visiting orchestra at 7.30, and were wanted to shift very fast post concert, but it always worked. It's just the BBC mucking around with concert timings to try new things and be 'accessible'. Another reason for a 7 start was one of the BBC orchestras not wanting to pay for hotels, so a 7 start mean't they could go home by bus...
