    Prom 36 - 13.08.14: VW/Alwyn Prom, BBC SO, Jansen / Oramo

    Wednesday, 13 August
    6.30 p.m. – c. 9.05 p.m.
    Royal Albert Hall

Vaughan Williams: The Wasps - overture
    Alwyn: Symphony No. 1
    Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending

Vaughan Williams: Job: A Masque for Dancing

    Janine Jansen, violin
    BBC Symphony Orchestra
    Sakari Oramo, conductor

Following his thrilling performance of A Sea Symphony at last year's First Night of the Proms, Sakari Oramo - a longtime champion of English music - returns with more Vaughan Williams. Ahead of her Last Night appearance, violinist Janine Jansen joins Oramo for that quintessentially English work The Lark Ascending, its dreamy pastoralism balanced by the jaunty charm and vigour of The Wasps overture. Job continues this season's thread of great 20th-century ballet scores, while William Alwyn's rarely heard First Symphony adds to the evening's nostalgia with the endless melody of its slow movement.

One of the most tempting concerts of the season, this, for me. I've heard 'Job' live in the RAH before... Oramo in this music is a most intriguing prospect - and an Alwyn Symphony !!

EDIT - just picked up a nicely-placed late return for this one: Wednesday evening wasn't free till today. And now it isn't again. Can't wait!

E-Rob - can you make it?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

      Thumbs up for this one!
I am even returning from holiday especially for this - much to mrsb's disgust. Ah well, we have to suffer for our art....

        Well done, brave man.

I considered the same thing for Brian's Gothic a while back, but allowed a £300 cost for an earlier return and some disruption to the family holiday to stop me from going ahead. With hindsight, I think I might've been wrong and I regret not attending the gig.

Nice programme, though why sandwiching Alwyn 1 between the Wasps and the Lark?
It has obviously escaped the attention of Mr W that Alwyn 1-4 are to be considered as one symphony in 16 mvts.
Whatever. having the Alwyn and Job in one concert is not bad at all, atually, it's a kind of bliss

... a sort of bridge to a better world?

I bought a seat so I wouldn't have to stanford two hours.

Alwyn 1's only other proms outing
The world's greatest classical music festival - stunning performances and collaborations.

I wonder if that really was the running-order

I shall be at this one too. I checked yesterday evening to see what seats were left and it looked as if there were only a couple left in the Stalls (did you get those Caliban?) which surprised me a little, I have to say.
Although I'd like to think that people are coming for the Alwyn - a long-time favourite of mine ever since Lyrita issued the 5 symphonies back in the 70's - I presume it is the VW offerings that have attracted the crowd.

No those were left after I'd had my wicked way - they were rather far round the far side. You must have gone online just after I logged out.

You could be stung, it may fly, more than a Jobs worth to say the concert is an Alwyn situation!

I think they're criminal, and the perpetraters should be locked up; four or five per cell.
