Wow... I don't think I registered this one when I was flicking through the Guide. Can't level accusations of dumbing-down at this Prom! Substantial fare with plenty of fibre...

Can't help thinking that Mahler will be listening from the shadows to these two great pieces which in their different ways pay tribute to his achievements.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Unfortunately, Bychkov has an inflamed hip and has had to withdraw from this Prom. His place is taken by Vasilly Petrenko.

I have booked for this and am not having much luck with the advertised artists this season.

This concert from the European Union Youth Orchestra opens with Berio’s 20th-century classic, Sinfonia – a witty, whistle-stop tour through centuries of Western culture, from Bach to The Beatles. Shostakovich’s embattled Fourth Symphony attempts to reconcile the same conflicts and contradictions as Berio, but finds only Babel and madness, in one of the composer’s most confrontational works.

Petrenko lead the NZSO in Shostakovitch's 7th about 18 months ago. A truly gripping performance for us Wellingtonians.
I will be tuning in over breakfast.

Do Youth orchestra concerts always sell well? this one isn't the cheapest level of ticket prices, and then there is scary old Berio......

Anyway, Looking forward to being there for this one, all being well. Even with the change of conductor, there is no Vasilating from me.........

i wonder which symphonic finale tends to work out the longest in most performances?

Oh yes! The Berio Sinfonia sounds like so much fun! Maybe not so much for the players, but certainly for me as a listener!

GO BERIO! You compose whatever the hell you want to!

How unnecessary for Tom Service to have to mention all Proms are being broadcast on r3
in his opening utterance after the magnificent symphony. Honestly!

You can't get the staff Alison.

I file DSCH's 4th under 'if you think you've had a bad day, listen to this'.
What a shattering work this is,I'm not even up to knowing whether or not it was a great performance, the music just takes over....all a blur...no idea what I'm trying to say here...except the 'where do we go from here' ending was perfect.

He'd obviously had too much orange squash before going on air tonight - earlier he had a couple of stabs at 'Luciano Berio' and 'phenomenological' and generally he seemed too hyperactive to be in safe charge of a microphone.

Apart from a couple of minor lapses in wind and brass (surely forgivable) this was an excellent concert. Certainly one of the best - in terms of clarity - performances of the Berio I've heard. But what shocking presentation. I dug out a cassette earlier today of a 1984 Proms performance of Sinfonia that I had attended and was struck by the sober, stick-to-the-script announcements. How I miss that. Tom Service is knowledgeable and often engagingly enthusiastic but this was just too much.
