I'm tempted to investigate them in reverse order based on my limited acquaintance with these composers, but in the meantime I'll raise you Dvorak's splendid D major for a view of life from the sunlit uplands, & Prokofiev's eerily unsettling 6th that so upset Comrade Zhdanov in 1948.....coincidentally, the same year as Havergal Brian's 6th " Sinfonia Tragica"....one of his better efforts

Will it be hot in the hall?...

Incidentally, forgot to report that it was really pleasantly cool on Monday evening in the hall, though hot outside - there was a temperature drop on entering which suggested that the ventilation system was doing some good. I found it comfortable throughout, in the stalls seats anyway; there were some ladies fanning themselves in the second half (I always think the energy it takes to do that would make me feel hotter; plus it's rather distracting I find).

In any event, worth giving this thread a bump: the concert's on BBC4 TV in high definition this evening at 19:30 !

Are there ventilators in the roof that can be opened? It would seem to be the simplest & most effective means of ventilation (rather like a greenhouse).

Apparently the entire dome over the auditorium of the Palermo Opera House opens in the summer.

I think there may be some opening in the roof. The most noticeable part of the system is the cool air blown out from around the edges of the Arena, though this struggles to penetrate to the centre (particularly now there is no fountain to break up the mass of prommers). It's usually noticeably cooler sitting on the floor of the Arena compared to standing, as the air is blown across at floor level up to a couple of feet (you can see the perforated sections of the Arena surround that allow the air in)

I was sweating like a stuck pig in Choir East for most of it and my companion's impressive décolletage was glistening delightfully under the lights. I hope it didn't cause too much of a distraction for the TV crew.

Before the floor covering was replaced, there was one spot in front of the fountain which contained a disc about the size of a saucer which could be discretely removed in the interval to provide a delicious draught of cold air. Sadly, this is now covered over!
