    Prom 5 - 21.07.14: Tonhalle Orchestra, J. Fischer / Zinman

    Monday 21 July
    7.30 p.m. – c. 9.50 p.m.
    Royal Albert Hall

Richard Strauss: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche
Dvořák: Concerto for Violin in A minor, Op. 53

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F ('Pastoral'), Op 68

    Julia Fischer, violin
    Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
    David Zinman, conductor

From the pastoral landscapes of Beethoven?s Symphony No. 6 to the vibrant folk scenes of Strauss's tone-poem Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks and Dvorák's Violin Concerto with soloist Julia Fischer, tonight's Prom takes a vivid journey across Central Europe. Celebrated Straussian David Zinman appears in his final concert as Chief Conductor of Zurich's Tonhalle Orchestra, stepping down after almost 20 years.

If not the most imaginative of concerts, The Tonhalle/Zinman combination has been a formidable one.

It'll be good to hear the Dvorak concerto getting a (?rare?) performance - especially with the rather wonderful Ms Fischer. The percussionists will love the programme - bash a couple of things around for quarter of an hour, then off to the pub. (Come to think of it - sounds like a typical day in the ferney household!)

As overture the little Milhaud "Pastoral" petite symphonie op.47,
then we've got the massive Langgaard symphony no.1 "(Cliff-)Pastoral",
and end with McPhee's 2nd Symphony, "Pastoral"

Intending to prom for this one with 16 year-old French relative - I think the pictorials of the first and last pieces, plus the charms of Ms Fischer, should keep his attention for what will be his first big classical concert - plus the experience of queuing and promming should be another uniquely 'English' experience to chalk up
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I shall be there to hear this splendid orchestra, but I'm afraid the Dvorak concerto does not really work for me. Still, Julia Fischer will be a fine interpreter no doubt.

                              Worth planning on that basis.

Looking forward to getting in there!
