Not to mention a new performing version of the sketches for Mahler's 10th symphony, completed by Karl Jenkins (with some editorial input from Ludovico Einaudi)

This will obviously be the place to announce Sir ALW's updated version (for the 21st Century) of The Dream of Gerontius that we've discussed on another thread. Sarah Brightman is the Angel in agony, but the lead singer ("Gerry") will be chosen by the TV audience during a six-week build-up. Sir ALW will incorporate Land of Hope in Praise to the holiest so that the audience can join in. 'Softly and gently' now refers to the beat (with a nod towards Essential Classics and Through the Night).

Preview of the updating of Newman -

"Jesus, Maria, I ain't 'alf feeling bad
And you keep on at me..."

"I had a kip; and now I feel OK..."

I thought that was the feelings she provoked in others? Or is it a description of her singing style?

I don't know about Putin, but Oda Slobodskaya did Peter & the Wolf at the Proms way back, and very entertaining she was !

              Getting back to the topic at hand (ahem) , continuing with what slim pickings that I can find in advance of the big announcement;

              (a) This link from back in December reveals one thematic hint:

"Britain is commissioning works by leading artists from the UK and around the world as part of its plans for commemorating the Centenary of the First World War.

First details of the cultural programme, exploring the heritage and resonance of the war today under the title 14-18 NOW, were announced at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, on December 6th 2013

The organisation will be working with leading cultural groups across the UK, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Opera House, Tate Liverpool and Liverpool Biennial, Welsh National Opera and National Theatre Scotland.

The BBC is a key partner and will present a number of projects as part of the programme, including concerts at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London."
              Jumping to much more recently:

"A special late Night Prom on 4 August 2014, the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The Prom will feature a new work by an important British composer."
              (b) Regarding the Salome Prom mentioned early on, with Runnicles and the Deutsche Oper berlin, the Intermezzo blog has an entry from March 7 (but the relevant information was taken down from the Deutsche Oper's website):

"Full details of the Deutsche Oper Berlin's visit to the Proms are now up on their website [sic]. 30 August is the date for a concert performance of Salome, with Nina Stemme in the title role and Donald Runnicles wielding the baton."

One that I shall have to miss as I'll be at Les Troyens with the Mariinsky Theatre conducted by Gergiev at the Edinburgh Festival the night before.

"By the way, you’ll hear Chailly and the Leipzigers playing the annual Beethoven Ninth at the 2014 Proms on 12th September: that should definitely be worth a listen."

From MusicwebInternational's review of the Chailly/Leipzigers Beethoven cycle.

Thanks Thropps and good to see you contributing again. I was present at the Chailly LvB 9 in the Barbican in 2011 and wasn't too enthused but found the CD a cracker having got used to Chailly's way with it. I will be there.

Cheers, Pet. I'm unfamiliar with this cycle but like what I've heard of his recent Brahms cycle, both i'the flesh at the Barbican and downloaded (the 2nd for Mrs. T).

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well, in all serious, there was this one line buried in The Guardian's article on Sir Neville's 90th:

How did a so-so violinist from Lincoln end up one of the world's greatest conductors? And will he ever slow down? As Neville Marriner hits 90, he talks to Stuart Jeffries about setting up the Academy of St Martin in the Fields orchestra, never saying no – and the teacher who had him beaten for over-gesticulating

"If 2013 was busy, 2014 is more so. There will be birthday concerts, both in London and abroad, at which he will conduct the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the world-famous orchestra he founded 54 years ago in this very sitting room. In February, he was in Japan and China. There will be a Prom, probably another Düsseldorf gig, and then there's the 28-disc box set of his recordings released last month."
Of course, this is all moot with the other thread. Wonder how accurate all the advance info was.
