A reasoned argument if ever there was one.

One problem with something like a pop prom is that it really highly unlikely to enable what the pop and rock music does well.
By the time pop/ rock gets to giant arenas or stadium rock level it needs very special , and very rare talents to overcome the obstacles that that kind of environment provides for that kind of music.

Pop music also doesnt need the kind of establishment endorsement that Prom gives it. In fact the very opposite.

Nobody ever said stadium rock was musically interesting. Not even people who like it !

Perhaps performing it without amplification. It might sound a lot better.

Well it might at least be musically interesting, for both the artists and audience.

The Oysterband, probably the most popular folk rock band in the UK sometimes end their set with an unamplified song, and it goes down really well.

An unamplified Paloma Faith set might actually be worth going to see, if she is a decent singer.

When they refer to musician's being "unplugged", it rarely means no amplification.

I'm sure people haven't heard of many artists
                Which is fine
But there's no point in "Classical Music" aficionados complaining about people on University Challenge not knowing anything about Beethoven when ignorance of contemporary popular culture is sometimes (and i'm NOT referring to anyone in particular!) used as a badge to identify what "club" one belongs to.

How do you know what it sounds like ?
Or are you using the Prof Says psychic "Stockhausen" listening method ?

Whatever happened to that chap who used to rant about the relative volumes of amplified singers ?

These Proms all feature orchestras so they present live orchestral performances to fans of the soloists, give the soloists an opportunity to expand their musical range, and broaden the musical range of the orchestras. They're special events, not just stops on standard tours by the soloists.

Pet Shop Boys - BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Singers
Gregory Porter - Count (James) Pearson & Duke (Grant) Windsor Proms Bands
                    Laura Mvula - Metropole Orchestra
Paloma Faith - Guy Barker Orchestra
                    Rufus Wainwright - Britten Sinfonia

And why exactly does the musical range of an orchestra need expanding?

                          ! ? ! ?

I didn't mean expanding from one rigid set to another, slightly broader set. Surely every lively arts outfit is perpetually evolving or exploring - with repertoire, members, collaborators, concert format, media, venue and every other aspect, to varying extents.

Even (especially?) specialised ensembles experiment and try many different things.

                            Absolutely

Have you heard the Britten Sinfonia recently ?
Tremendous playing and a sense of ensemble second to none IMV

Yes, Thomas Gould playing Sitkovetsky (is that right?) arrangement of Goldberg Vars and more. Absolutely sensational.

Nobody is doubting the quality of the Britten Sinfonia. And I doubt if even they , artistic credibility and all, are in the business of turning down a RAH payday.

I reckon the pet Shop Boys nailed this issue a long time ago......

Perhaps somebody could find out how the Stranglers long term hook up with top orchestras is going, artistically or commercially?
