Originally posted by Cockney Sparrow View PostIts arranged by Christopher Palmer, interpolated with narration. I like it, and the ACSMF / Marriner recording on Chandos** which has Christopher Plummer (** might therefore be on Naxos Music Library if you can access and stream it...) . Apparently, per the CD booklet, Plummer and Marriner wanted the arrangement and it states it includes 90% of the film music.

Still, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra might offer the novelty factor of a few elves in its wind section. It loved to happen. -- Marcus Aurelius

'Staged' St Matthew Passion

what do we know about this "staging" of St MP ? is the chorus not in serried ranks but running around the stage ? with costumes and props ?
a shame this prom is not one of the televised.
(Elsewhere in the Proms)
I accept that the Prom season is rather thin on early and chamber music but when the music I enjoy is shoved aside by this sort of programmes, I find it hard to maintain my respect to the World Largest Classical Music Festival.
Pet Shop Boys, CBeebies and Military Wives among Proms debuts
Other highlights ( ) of this year's BBC Proms season include the Berlin Philharmonic, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the return of both Daniel Barenboim and Marin Alsop, announces outgoing director Roger Wright

Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra...any thoughts? I'm tempted by Mahler 2 in the hope that the organ gets an outing in the finale this year. Last year's use of what sounded like a Casio keyboard was ludicrous considering all those lovely pipes in the background. It loved to happen. -- Marcus Aurelius

It seems rather more dumbed down than usual to me. Sports Prom? Military Wives' Choir? (Let's hope they've improved, because they aren't very good.) Various pop singers? I know concerts like these are a minority, but I don't like having them there at all.
Highlights for me at a quick glance - Bach St John and St Matthew, Britten War Requiem, Strauss operas, some of the chamber music, Mahler.

Every year when the season is announced there are the usual cries of Why this? Why that? Not enough Havergal Brian etc. etc. It tries my patience somewhat.

If any other nation broadcast such a music festival free-to-air we'd all be throwing our hats in the air.

I can think of better works than Kiss Me Kate to celebrate Shakespeare, but will check what else is programmed.
