But this concert should be worth it for the Walton alone, as it apparently includes music cast aside in favour of Ron Goodwin's score.

The DVD version offers the choice of either the Walton score, or the Goodwin one preferred by the producer.

Why only excerpts of these two works? Both only last about 10 minutes. If they'd excised "that bloody awful Warsaw Concerto", as Spike Milligan regularly describes it in his war memoirs, there would surely be time enough for the full Ligeti and Strauss.

...along with that clumsy jumpcut from the bone to the spaceship - something that film-buffs drool over, but it's so badly done that hardly anyone notices it unless it is pointed out to them.

Perhaps, fhg. Though I do wonder at the perceived perpetuation of the myth that the Ligeti is film music per se, rather than a self-contained, extant work plundered by the unscrupulous Kubrick, without permission, for use in 2001.

I note that in The Times and Telegraph radio listings for today they both give Johan Strauss as the composer of Also sprach Zarathustra. Also both show the concert lasting three hours which seems highly unlikely.

Let's hope not. The BBC Concert Orchestra made hard work of playing the Also sprach opening together. The LPO from last night gets my vote!
