but I think in the full score there's a line over the first of the four notes, making it longer [but it always sounds as if it is twice as long as the other three notes]
Yes, you're absolutely right. It's Dora Penny's slight stammer. Here's a link to an essay I wrote some time ago as the preface to a score of the Enigma. You might find it interesting:

You're right: there are four semiquavers, the first with a tenuto accent ( - ) the other three with staccato dots. This means that the first semiquaver lasts longer than the remaining three; but in many performances, the first note appears very slightly before the beat, (the score puts it on the beat) so that the note is made longer than written. I'll have to check the composer's recording(s) to see what he does with it.

thanks pab, I would read your essay but my computer says I need to download some new software to do so, which I'm reluctant to do

That's not good. I'll see if I can provide a link another way. Watch this space.

The essay opens easily in the freeware Open Office suite, which is what I use rather than the expensive Microsoft alternative, the file formats of which it is compatible with.

I would say "Change to a Mac", but I feel a little too Stephen Fry/Douglas Adams/Richard Dawkins doing that! I've started a thread asking how I link a Word document - it should be possible, after all.
