    Prom 42 - 14.08.13: Janáček, Beethoven & Tchaikovsky

    7.00pm – c. 9.25pm
    Royal Albert Hall

    Janáček
    Sinfonietta (24 mins)
    Beethoven
Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor (36 mins)
    INTERVAL
    Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 3 in D major, 'Polish' (46 mins)

Sunwook Kim piano, Proms debut artist
    Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
    Kirill Karabits conductor

This summer's Tchaikovsky symphony cycle continues as Kirill Karabits conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the dance-infused Third Symphony, written in the summer of 1875 and dubbed the 'Polish' following its 1899 London premiere in the Crystal Palace.
Leeds International Piano Competition-winner Sunwook Kim makes his Proms debut in Beethoven's dramatic Piano Concerto No 3 in a concert that begins with the dazzling brass fanfares and bustling street-life of Brno as translated into music in Janacek's 1926 Sinfonietta.

Is Beethoven 3 a popular debut choice? It often seems that way.

I'm looking forward to hearing the Tchaikovsky, which I think is an underrated piece. I don't remember a recent live performance, and Karabits is good.

Morning/afternoon, yes me too now. Aren't you listening to the BSO concert ?

            I've just noticed it's a 7pm start.

I'm listening to this concert on FM. Magnificent sound and balance.
My favourite Beethoven concerto, superbly played and with an immaculate accompaniment.
Technical Brilliance and scintillating vitality in this superb performance by this young soloist.
I don't think that I have ever heard a better performance of this, my favourite Beethoven concerto
Listening now to the Bournemouth players performing the Tchaikowsky, I wonder why we bother importing these international orchestras at massive expense.
This is the best - I might say the most glorious orchestral sound that I have heard so far in this 2013 Proms season.

I've been doubtful about Maestro Karabits in the past. Not any longer. I gladly eat my words. This is fantastic orchestral playing

I've had my eye on Sunwook Kim since his performance of the Brahms 1st PC with the Hallé & Elder to win the Leeds Piano Competition - I have it on DVD and it is a match for any other reading I know.

This LvB PC3 is no disappointment
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Indeed not, and the Sinfonietta was a very fine performance too.

Much time that I have for a couple of HIPP performances I have heard of the 3rd Concerto, the Annie Fischer/BRSO/Fricsay recording remains my benchmark, and tonight's bears comparison.

Symphony No. 3 certainly lives up to it's reputation for presenting no particularly successful ideas

I join you but I fear that with Hornspieler's enthusiastic comments, for which I have the greatest respect, I am going to have to listen a few more times. Over the years I just haven't managed to attune myself to this symphony and I am a huge Tchaikovsky fan...

It was, indeed, mostly another very good broadcast but suddenly in movement 3 they shoved the dynamics right which was so typical. The engineers seem to get bored about half way through some of these works and having as here produced up to then superb quality, time and time again they seem to feel that they have just GOT to fiddle!

I feel very much the same way. There are some good things there, but the bombastic finale ruins it.

Fine Janacek, magnificent Beethoven P.C.#3 - Karabits is a great Beethovenian.
