    Prom 37 - 10.08.13: Urban Classic Prom

    8.00pm – c. 10.00pm
    Royal Albert Hall

    Fazer singer
    Laura Mvula singer
    Maverick Sabre singer

    BBC Symphony Orchestra
    Jules Buckley conductor

A dynamic meeting of musical cultures as conductor Jules Buckley brings together the BBC Symphony Orchestra with leading performers from the UK’s vibrant urban music scene. In
Urban Classic’s experimental fusion of musical styles, high-octane orchestral showpieces by Mosolov and Henze rub shoulders with rap, R&B and soul. ‘It’s a culture clash,’ says Jules
Buckley. ‘We’re taking artists from different worlds and messing with their music, putting it in an orchestral context and exploring it in a new way.’

    There will be one interval

So will Radios 1, 2 & 6 reciprocate with a similar culture clash? Somehow I doubt it.

We shall see/hear. But to me it just looks like an excuse to say, Look! we've taken the Proms to 6 Music, 1Xtra, Radio 1, BBC Three: 'Classical music' is reaching out to new audiences. We've seen Radio 3 reaching out to new audiences (R3 strategy c. 2000), now we're seeing the Proms reaching out to new audiences (Doctor Who, this one - isn't there a separate 6 Music Prom?). What isn't much in evidence in any of it is - classical music (other than 'messed with', as the man says). Note the expression 'messing with their music' ... Perhaps one would rather they didn't, not in a Prom.

But it might be very good

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Thomas Ades, Marc-Anthony Turnage across all BBC channels, with Harrison Birtwistle, for good measure.

Watching on bbc3. Seems like a very jolly prom and one which would have been fantastic to have experienced in person.

Great to see the orchestra enjoying being a part of it. How far things have come since the po-faced attitude of the orchestra to performing Jon Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra at The RAH in 1969...

The big big problem in the hall is quality of the amplification, the gospel prom was unbearable in the hall but sounded good the radio - so i decided to sit this one out.

It was very enjoyable, due more to the energy and fearlessness of the performers as well as the arr. than (thankfully) to any perceived strategizing on the part of the BBC. The hosts were rather irritating, but then it wouldn't be the Proms without annoying presenters!

bad attitude I know, but I've just done a fast forward through the iPlayer of this looking for the Mosolov and Henze - without success - where did they come in the running order please ?

I liked the close-up of Sir Henry's bust at the end - I couldn't quite tell what expression he had

Mosolov 1st in 1st half - surprised you could miss this one (gets a fairly regular outing) - what sounded like Henze (I think) at start of 2nd half but I missed the start of each due to the more than iritating presenters -
