In the second of their two Proms appearances, Mariss Jansons and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra are joined by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Choir for Mahler's magnificent 2nd Symphony, the 'Resurrection' Symphony. It begins with a depiction of a funeral procession and opens out into a vision of life after death, with soprano and alto soloists joining for the last two movements and a choral climax making an unmissable impact.

After the Mahlerfests of 2011-12, it's good to have one of the great Mahler works back again, but this time purely on merit.

I was informed by the Edinburgh Festival on 15th July that Anna Larsson has had to withdraw from the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra’s Mahler Symphony No 2 concert at the Usher Hall on Monday 12 August. Gerhild Romberger will be replacing her. Has there been any notice of a change at the Prom?

I hadn't noticed anything to that effect being posted at the RAH: now there's a surprise.

I notice that in the Proms Guide this concert was marked as being televised, yet in the mini-guide and on the website it isn't. Typo? or is there another reason?

Yes no sign I can see of a broadcast... although the cameras will obviously be in position as I see the late Bach prom is scheduled to be televised later in the month...

Hence one imagines that the Mahler will be filmed and will surface at some point

It says "TV Cameras Present" on my ticket (for the Mahler) - though as this was issued by the RAH potential for doubt remains...

Auntie Beeb seems to be aiming for some sort of special achievement award in the area of temporal discombobulation in the televising of this year's Proms.

My brother posted a comment on facebook that he'd watched it on TV last night! Shome mishtake, surely?

I won't listen tonight as I'll be going to the performance in Edinburgh on Monday (although perhaps I should listen, as I'll have particularly tiring days on Sunday & Monday, & could very well spend the entire concert fast asleep!)


(But then I am up in the gallery, where the seats are so uncomfortable that falling asleep would be quite an achievement. & if I did manage it, I'd be in danger of slumping forward & falling off)

Oh dear - looks like I might need to be strapped into my seat to save me from auto-defenestration (or whatever the equivalant term is for falling off the balcony in a theatre)
