The lack of interest that you display in learning (via asking "why?") and, thereby, changing, may leave you in the past, constantly listening to music that you won't enjoy because you've not asked why you like/dislike this genre, that composer, or these players. To reduce life to a binary experience: 0/1; black/white or like /dislike , to "digitise" it, is to lose so many advantages offered by an "analogue" world.

The people you label as "experts' and musicologists are merely searchers after knowledge. If I have any expertise it's as a chemist. My musical life has been, and is, a journey through listening, singing, conducting and, most of all, thinking. I enjoy thinking and debating music and its performance as much as the music, itself.
You can write and post pages of whatever you want to say but you will have to be prepared to read others say ‘I can’t be bothered to read all that stuff’. That’s the democracy of the Internet. It works both ways. Some of us enjoy listening to what we enjoy and that’s good enough. It’s only music. How other people listen to music is none of your (anyone’s) business. Let’s talk about music.

I beg to disagree, doversoul. Do politicians say at election time that how people vote is none of their business? No, we're all in the persuasion business - I've been in teaching and whether students preferred alchemy or chemistry was a matter I cared passionately about. Of course, I agree that people have the freedom to listen to whatever in whichever way they wish. But... I wish to retain the right to influence them both in their choice of works and in their depth of appreciation.

Too few youngsters listen to serious music for its future to be sustainable and assured. I make it my business to influence and convert.

I rather guessed that (re: your being in teaching). I admire your crusading spirit but you’ve got a wrong audience here for your wish/business. I'd just talk about music, which is much more likely to have influence on others on this forum.

Thanks for that advice - let's see if I can heed it!

All Edashtav has EVER done is write, with eloquent warmth, wit and insight about music! AND respect for different views. Which is why I love him even when I disagree with him.

Don't fall into the Marvin the Paranoid Android's trap - he wants to watch reasonable people criticising each other. Probably doing it now. Hi Marvin! Will you shut yourself down now you've had your wicked fun?
