    Prom 18 - 26.07.13: Wagner – Siegfried

    5.00pm – c. 10.20pm
    Royal Albert Hall

    Wagner
    Siegfried (238 mins)
    (concert performance; sung in German)

Lance Ryan tenor, Proms debut artist (Siegfried)
    Nina Stemme soprano (Brünnhilde)
    Terje Stensvold baritone (Wanderer)
    Peter Bronder tenor (Mime)
    Johannes Martin Kränzle baritone (Alberich)
    Eric Halfvarson bass (Fafner)
Rinnat Moriah soprano, Proms debut artist (Woodbird)
    Anna Larsson mezzo-soprano (Erda)
    Staatskapelle Berlin
    Daniel Barenboim conductor

Daniel Barenboim's Ring with the Staatskapelle Berlin - the first ever complete cycle at the BBC Proms - continues with the razored strings and yelping brass of a violent storm, the cloudburst of incestuous love, a bitter marital dispute and the first appearance of Wotan's rebel daughter, Brunnhilde, sung by a leading exponent of the role, Nina Stemme. The cunning dwarf, Mime, tries to manipulate Siegfried into stealing the magic ring from the dragon, Fafner, with the sword Nothung. But his plans go awry when Siegfried takes the ring for himself...

What does 'bump' and 'bumping' mean?

Simply adding a redundant reply to move the thread to the top of the pile to stimulate discussion.

Hopefully Mr Barenboim can get through this one without appearing to have a strop in full view of about 1000 of us in the audience. Not the first time he's given the impression of berating a colleague onstage at the Proms. If the impression is a true one it's not becoming or, frankly, professional, regardless of the reason. It detracts significantly from whatever else is being achieved...

Oh this is dire. Lance Ryan is dreadful as Siegfried. He seems to belong to the 'If I wobble my voice about enough then I must hit the right note at least some of the time' school of singing. PloddenBoim carries on at his sedate pace.

This continues to be one of the most compelling, thrillingly conducted live Rings I've heard, and I've heard many. Barenboim is a genius, no question. Fantastic first act.

And thirded! Especially the orchestral playing! The sound that the Bamberg SO has for Wagner, is quite extraordinary!

And if they get out of the way and give the Berliner Staatskapelle a try it might be even better
