In principle I would agree. I am merely pointing out that under the fetish of new and modern that dominates arts administration types these days, that principle could lead to some annoying developments.

It would be nice if that were true in the programming of R3 and The Proms
what on earth is an "annoying" development anyway ?
Do you mean having to actually listen to something you haven't heard before ?

        No, I don't.

An annoying development is a development I find annoying.

You just have to get used to Mr.GG's patronising tone and overwhelming belief in his own intellectual superiority. He just can't help it.

For what it's worth, I have always enjoyed the Sea Songs, and as a Clarinettist, I used to look forward to hearing how the principal coped with the big Cadenza for that instrument. But that was first truncated, and then given the chop completely a few years ago, shortly before the whole Fantasia was Chilcotted in the name of inclusivity.

I wish I could agree. It was marred for me by .. umm, how can I express this .. an inconsiderate lady a couple of rows behind me who talked all the way through it.

Do be careful, lads and lasses, or else this Radio-3-orientated thread will be hidden.

Well as I am sure you know there was a long and fairly technically demanding Clarinet Cadenza, which led into "Home Sweet Home", which I have had the somewhat nerve-wracking pleasure of playing a few times. Back in the day, the entire Cadenza was performed at every last night, and Colin Bradbury was the Principal Clarinet who I remember being the most frequent player. ( I remember he squeaked one year, which just proves that everybody's human!).But gradually the cadenza was made shorter and shorter and then of course when Bob Chilcott rendered the Fantasia almost unrecognizable, it was consigned to history.

I would very much like to hear the Sea Songs Fantasia performed again, in its entirety, preferably with the opening Trumpet and French Horn Calls, that were hardly ever performed in full, even when the Cadenza was. How about having Brass players dotted around the hall to perform them? That would be rather fun!
