I don't want to pay for a nuclear arsenal, wars in the middle east, the royal so called family, nuclear energy programmes, inflated salaries for Doctors/CEOs of local authorities etc, HS2, and so on ad infinitum. I didn't choose them, I don't want the burden.

Most parents are all too well aware of the obligations (including financial/social/moral) of their status. "Free" education is only one part of the picture.
Perhaps those who resent apparently paying for other peoples children to be well educated (which would be nice!) might consider the implications of a poorly educated population, or how our population might be if parents were all made to pay the direct cost. They might like to consider how life might be in other areas if we applied the same principles.

However, speaking personally, as they say thsese days, I am happy to pay a small subsidy towards helping Naresh Sohal write and promote his music.
As long as it's just short pieces, of course.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Absolutely! Mind you, in my view part of the benefit is the guarantee that at certain fixed times of the year other people's children are locked up out of the way, so that those of us who want to enjoy a well-earned break can do so without having to put with the little brats. Mr Gove's recent bonkers proposal to do away with this does not endear him.

won't that keep them out of the way?

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-23129472. Gove plans to let schools choose their own term dates, so there'll never be a time when you can guarantee that all the brats will be locked up. Clear now?

How do you cope with all the under fives ? There is no guarantee that they won't be roaming the streets, playing in the park etc

              yes thanks.
Not sure you need to worry. School holidays are tending to get shorter,(even in the independent sector) and its not much of the year really. The rest of the time the kids are safely out of the way, and holidays for everybody else are cheaper. Most LAs will stick with the current dates, I suspect.

I wonder if a term like " Brats" was applied wholesale to some other group in society, whether it would be considered acceptable.
