I ask because my son is going to a Prom on August 2nd to hear Rachmaninov's PC 3, and he's just noticed that the new piece by Naresh Sohal that precedes it is 45 minutes long. This will try the patience of his wife, I think! Will it be difficult for the not-very-experienced to listen to? I know absolutely nothing about this composer.
Anyone know about Naresh Sohal?

If you go to the Reviews section you'll see how some people have described his music.
I hope this helps.

Long time since I heard any, but I remember it being pretty boring - aimless, meandering stuff I'm afraid. Can't think why they've commissioned him.

Talk about writing something off without experiencing it first hand
A few years ago I did a project for a well known music festival in a town beginning with the letter H.
I worked with a visual artist.
I looked at his work online before meeting him and it seemed weak from what I saw
when I saw the work in context it blew me away !
If you want to get what you know there's a special radio station for you run by the nice Mr Henley who has done so much for music education not

Surely it must a typo - with the Rachmaninov 3 to be followed by Tchaikovsky 5 - it cannot be that long .
EDIT Heavens above it seems it is - a two interval Prom.
Well sounds ideal to me for the parents of two youngsters - they don't have to rush out of the house after all and can just roll up at 8.15 !

Well, what a depressing, predictable thread. Talk about worst fears confirmed...
Switch on at 19:30 (go on, force yourself). Listen to The Cosmic Dance by Naresh Sohal. Then you can at least make a comment based on minimal, rather than next to no, experience. Stretch your willpower and try to avoid instant dismissal. The GREAT problem with whizzing around the web for a quick listen is that you've prejudiced your OWN opinion.
If you REALLY hate it, that's a very good reason to.... go back and hear it again. The iPlayer (should have been) a godsend for new music. But does it change attitudes? Does it ****.
David Matthews' Vision of the Sea, Ades' Totentanz, Lachenmann's Tanzlied... "Listen again?" Once with prejudice, twice times never...Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 27-07-13, 00:43.
