Lord Mersey
This glorious summer of sport and music will be complete when the England football team win a penalty shoot out.

A good slice of 20thC orchestral in the first fortnight , and some 10pm Stockhausen...
The odd Staatskapelle soundcheck apart, have to take a break while others feast on Wagner though - can't face it again yet. Maybe when I'm 80.
Don't miss the Verdi 4 Sacred Pieces in Prom 12 - a gorgeous, little-known late masterpiece.
As usual the dogs will be well-fed in Part 1 of the first night...

discovered on Sunday that I know somebody(rather well) who knows Rog rather well....... funny old world.....don't think I can exert much influence though.
I hope to get to a couple even so......
Good heads up for the Verdi, Jayne..sounds interesting.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.
I am not a number, I am a free man.

I can't get to the Proms these days living here up North. i shall listen, watch and fume as I have done for a number of years.
I shall hear prommers clap between movements, disrupting the music's natural progression.
I shall hear prommers shouting and clapping before the conductor's hands come down - stopping the music's natural breath. No doubt someone will shout out wanting to be the first to show his/her 'enthusiasm' (I'd say 'show off')
I shall probably hear some mundane or badly played performances cheered to the rafters.
Thankfully my equipment has a 'sound off' button to cut these interruptions out.
So now I'll put on my flack jacket and send this post.

Premature applause almost always originates in the cheaper seats in the upper part of the hall, usually with a few uncertain beginners, followed by others following suit. I won't categorically say that no prommer ever applauds in the wrong place, but this is rare, simply because this is the most well informed section of the audience. It takes considerable committment to stand for hours of Wagner, as we will be doing this year.
The same goes for unsuppressed coughing, while the clink of glasses comes from the freebie customers in the boxes ( Champagne courtesy of their employers )
Time after time on these boards during the Proms I encounter disdainful treatment of musical enthusiasts, many of whom are professional musicians or students.
It would be very nice if this year we could discuss the performances. You are of course perfectly free to be disagreeable, I suppose we don't have to read you.

When did you first prom Ferret? I started back in 1948, YES alongtime ago, and believe you started about then, still at school?
I can't get there any more but I applaud your positive attitude to the concerts and these MBs.
Say 'hello' to the old place for me, I love the RAH and have some very good memories
EDIT - I've got a nasty feeling Ferret that I've mixed you up with Ferney and added some years to your age. I just know SOMEONE admitted to 1948 when I didLast edited by salymap; 11-07-13, 17:13.
