    Proms 2013: advance info

OK, 18 days early for a 2013 Proms thread. Couldn't resist, though, having just found a tidbit in one European orchestra's 2013-2014 season flipbook:

    "Zomerconcerten

    met Yannick Nezet-Seguin

    Augustus 2013....

    * do 22 aug Londen Royal Albert Hall
    (BBC Proms)"
No clue what their program will be, but at least we now have the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra confirmed as the 2nd non-UK ensemble for the 2013 Proms.

The first, of course, is the Berlin Staatskapelle and Barenboim for their Ring from July 22-28. Thus it's not hard to infer:

    July 22, 2013: Das Rheingold
    July 24, 2013: Die Walkure
    July 26, 2013: Siegfried
    July 28, 2013: Gotterdammerung

From the archived Proms threads, FtC mentioned VW's A Sea Symphony for the First Night. IGI had mentioned a Tristan und Isolde in the works as well, regarding Wagner, and also speculated that Billy Budd was a likely shot for the Glyndebourne Prom. I'm inclined to agree, because besides this being Britten year, the only other Billy Budd Prom was back in 1979. Anyway, will be interesting to see what, if any, other information is floating about on-line for this summer's Proms.

Many thanks for your annual detective skills, BSP.

Wonder if the Ring will be concert performances or semi-staged. All being well, I will be there.

I've heard that Tristan und Isolde is scheduled for performance in the midst of the Ring (the 27th, I believe).

Also, I have a strong tip-off that we're getting Tippett's A Midsummer Marriage, which is excellent news.

Also with Barenboim and the Berlin Staatskapelle? With Bayreuth on at the same time I wonder if there will be enough singers to go round.

Dunno, Siegfried and Tristan are always a headache to cast. Heldentenors could be burning up the airmiles come July and August! Let's hope they don't exhaust themselves.

Well, you can be pretty sure that Britten will be well represented.

Wagner's Ring...? As David Bowie said, "I ain't got the power...anymore..."

Tippett Midsummer Marriage... yes, perhaps, would be lovely... mood-dependent as ever. Shame David Bowie didn't write the libretto.

Looking forward to loads of Richard Hoddinott, Edmund Rubbra, Grace Williams, Walter Mathias, John Foulds, Stanley Bate, Arthur Butterworth, Benjamin Frankel and all kicked off by Tippett's Mask Of Time.

We ought to consider ourselves lucky that we are able to give preference to our boys and girls over Johnny Foreigner. Well, the Proms are British, what do you expect?

                      Indeed it is. Fingers crossed.

Isn't it time Tippett came back into fashion?

English Touring Opera are going to perform King Priam next season. I am not generally a great devotee of Tippett's music, but I was greatly impressed by King Priam in the Kent Opera production (early 80s?). I saw it twice and it was very powerful.

Yes, but---- I sat through the Tippett Piano Concerto at the Barbican recently with the excellent Steven Osborne, and it isn't one for the archive for me. I'd like to hear all four symphonies again though.
