Indeed it was, from hearing it on iPlayer, and I say this as someone not at all an aficionado of Italian Renaissance era vocal music. Very nice musicological work from Hugh Keyte to make this presentation possible, by his reconstructions and arrangements. For those who care about such things, the "cheap thrills" moment (meant in a good way) starts at 55:22 in the "Magnificat a 20/28 'con il sicut loctus'", with the interpolated military music that Keyte alludes to in the program note. The brass threaten to sound as erratic as Le Concert Spirituel initially, but come off with better intonation and fewer muckups, where it probably helps that they're not being driven along like speed demons. The overtones and ambience of the chimes add to the atmosphere of that section. For those sympathetic to music of Monteverdi and his era, you should give this one a go. Still some time left on iPlayer.
