Same here! I've long been an admirer of the symphonies, and have heard many fine performances, but Manze and BBC SSO offered something really special.

Of course...though I think that itself is related to the first and last of my suggestions.

But I see that it is indeed tomorrow night...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

"Smileys of the day" award contender !
It almost always pays to go to concerts on the correct day. Almost always.

back to the journalists...gave up reading most reviews about 25 years ago when I realised that a journo clearly wasn't at the Saints game I was at the previous night.
Of course they can write interesting stuff, but generally I believe the evidence of my own eyes and ears !
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I may have misunderstood your post...apologies if so..but most people that I know, people not really interested in classical music, would , I suspect, regard VW 4 and 6 as pretty avant garde and challenging.
                  Just a thought !

I'll try to hear the talk, as in the hall at the RCM Anthony Paine's replies were practically inaudible. This is the worst hall for speech I have ever visited.

I have been rather disappointed by the comments of some on this thread implying as if the modernist harmonic language deployed in 4 was adopted as if out of thin air; there are signs aplenty of the direction VW was taking in a number of works from the 1920s, notably "Flos Campi", with its extraordinary polytonal opening, and "Job", notably but not solely in that work with the "Satan theme". We look to gifted artists to expand their vocabulary.

I wouldn't call my musical taste particularly conservative I appreciate a vast spectrum of music from Carter to Byrd and I'm only 47 and have loved RVW's music since I was 16. To my eyes on the evening that didn't appear to be a great age difference in the audience between the Bernstein Mass prom and the RVW one.
