I love South American Music and was disappointed that I was unable to hear it last night, so I will try the iPlayer some time today.

However, I did manage to listen to the Dvorak, which has already received a mixed assessment. Here is an example from amac4165:

Tidy enough, I thought, but a few dodgy moments from the double basses, especially the pizzicato in the slow movement.

So why did I get the feeling at times that I was listening to a Youth Orchestra? Was it the Simon Bolivar influence?

No, I think it was because of the marked difference of quality output - call it "elan" if you like, between the strings and the wind and brass.

In particular, the oboe and trumpet exuded confidence and seemed, if anything, to be over-playing with their assurance. Am I making sense here?

I have had quite a few dealings with youth orchestras and have always been aware of the difference in sound quality and output between (relatively) inexpensive wind instruments and (" ...couldn't afford that sort of money!") that for professional quality string instruments. Also there is much fiercer competion for the limited number of woodwind and brass places than there is for the string playing applicants.

Tell me if I'm wrong. Maybe it's all down to the problems of achieving a satisfactory sound balance for radio transmission in the Albert Hall.

EV - I follow you and I agree. I too had the impression of listening to a very good student orchestra... and that was hearing it in the hall. (Welcome to The Forum, btw! ) Having heard the Simon Bolivar gang play 'Malambo', the last movement of the Ginastera, the Brazilians came in some distance behind, too.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I do agree that the fifth symphony would be good in concert (especially if you're going to have a symphony in the first half).
yes why is popularity a problem.? Someone is hearing the New World for the first time- just don't listen to it for five years I enjoyed the bit I heard anyway and I haven't heard it for yonks.

It's been so long since I've heard it, I'd forgotten there was a Serge Gainsbourg tune in there!

Ah, yes: Je t'Aime (Moi non Plus) as used in the Hovis adverts.

I was at the hall last night and thoroughly enjoyed the concert. I like Marin's Baltimore recording of the New World symphony and enjoyed the performance last night. I thought the Ginistera was excellent especially in the final Malambo where I heard a bit more detail than I have heard in previous performances. The Copland and Tower were also excellent. The Copland seemed to benefit from a more matter of fact, speedier performance that didn't drag it's heels as musch as it can... The only piece that left me cold was the Villa Lobos.... Just didn't seem to grab me... Looking forward to watching tonight's Prom though on BBC 4. It appears last night's prom will be on BBC2 on Saturday so will deffo watch. Also the atmosphere in the hall was great last night.

This concert is now on the iPlayer, and there's also a recording on BBC2 at 20.00 this coming Saturday.

I agree, the New World is a popular work that I nonetheless find evergreen if well played. Kondrashin/Vienna Phil (Decca) for instance

The catalogue is full of well-played versions, but Kondrashin's is up there with them!

The BBC SO / Kempe New World is a fine lively performance available on a BBC Legends CD.

I would also endorse Caliban and Pabmusic's rec of the VPO / Kondrashin - the last time I looked you could get it very cheaply on Decca Eclipse.

Don't wish to labour the point about the Dvorak 9th (although it's quite hard to avoid the largo if you listen to much radio or watch tv...) but if the 5th was played more often instead (some hope...) more people would get to know more, lovable Dvorak; 3 and 4 are pretty good too, 3rd's finale could really raise a roar at a Prom (I wonder when it last did...?)

Yes, there's always some New World virgin attending somewhere, but the hovis won't get stale if it's put in the freezer for a bit. We should count from 1 to 5 instead of 5 to 9.

I still sometimes think of the G major as no 4 instead of no 8 and D minor as 2 instead of now 7. It was a rocky time for a music librarian when they changed over and we referred to thm by keys mostly.

I have a 40 box set of good Dvorak recordings and love most of them. My best ever was no 8 in Gmajor with Vaclav Talich and the Czech Phil on 78s when I was a teenager
