Youth and a celebration of national ensembles are major strands at this year's Proms and they come together in this concert. Two ensembles share the bill and each introduces a brand-new work in the context of mixed programmes of British music. And a suitably patriotic touch in this Jubilee year comes in the form of Walton's Crown Imperial and Derek Bourgeois's virtuosic Blitz.

An interesting collection of works very well performed by the two groups. Thoroughly enjoyed at home.

I caught this Prom on iPlayer just before the time ran out. I'm normally not a brass band fan or a wind ensemble aficionado, but I agree that this was a fine, fine, quite enjoyable Prom. There were some shaky moments at the start of the 2nd half (trumpets, if memory serves), but things settled down quite quickly. The "happy clappers" were out in force in the 1st half, but not in the 2nd half that I could tell. Overall, among the newer works, the Martin Ellerby and Derek Bourgeois selections struck me as the biggest crowd-pleasers. Both composers were certainly new to me.
