Just to clear up the disturbance issue.....I took part in the performance and had a goood view of the front of the Arena. There was an altercation between someone sitting on the Arena floor and another Prommer who had taken great exception to it. Stewards were involved and someone was ushered out through the bull run.

I have read the comments with great interest. In the past 3 months the Halle Choir have spent 22 hours in rehearsal or performance with the orchestra and soloists. This reflects Mark Elders's absolute attention to detail and the huge investment by the Halle and BBC in the project. Even at 5pm on Saturday Elder was polishing and nuancing orchestral passages and we were discovering little nuggets of gold in the score.

With piano rehearsals the choir have clocked up over 70 hours working on the piece, and it has taken that long for me to fully appreciate it. The Apostles is a complex work, and some of the negative comments on the merits of the piece, such as the Guardian's, seem to disclose more about the superficiality of the reviewer.

I have listened to all the recordings of the work, and on balance think Elder's is the definitive version. I prefer the performances of Sheila Armstrong (Boult) and Alfreda Hodgson (Hickox), but Evans and Coote were both very good. Groves was in better form in Manchester than London. He seemed to be struggling most of the week vocally and a bit out of sorts. Sherratt's Judas was a little more theatrically restrained than Bayley's, but his tone was wonderful. Kempster was as good as a young Terfel and Imbrailo is without doubt the finest Christ on record. The Halle Youth Choir as the semi-chorus are crystalline in tone and a wonderful asset.

I can't add much to what has already been said about the orchestral playing and Elder's conception of the piece.

Many thanks for your insights & judgements, dalesider - and for all the work that everyone put into that Prom

I don't think it's been mentioned before, but Boult's recording was actually prepared (rehearsed) by Vernon Handley.

Imbrailo was excellent and, to my mind, the finest of the soloists. I am looking forward to buying the CD as a permanent reminder of a wonderful evening at the RAH.

However, and it might be unfashionable to say this, there is something magical about John Carol Case's interpretation for Boult. The voice might have a period feel to it (but hey, we're all for authenticity these days), but his dignity is unparalleled. I have a similar affection for JCC's contributions to the Willcocks recording of the Fauré Requiem. His voice was very special!

Yes. It was quite well publicised at the time - or rather, Handley started to be known as the man who prepared The Apostles for Boult.

Here's the Gramophone review - Handley is mentioned on the third page*. Of course, Handley was not well known at the time (except to followers of the Guildford Philharmonic): http://www.gramophone.net/Issue/Page...s.#header-logo

*How long has it been since we could talk of the third page (of four!) of a Gramophone review!

It's all relative really. It's a bit like saying Bach's Sy John Passion is the weakest of Bach's large-scale choral works.

Anyway, I was gutted not to hear The Apostles, having been in the Lake District for a fortnight. But never mind; the recording awaits.

Well, I hope you are listening to it as I type, EA. Utterly sublime. So glad I heard it live on the night. While I don't warm to the voice of Alice Coote, Jacques Imbrailo is so wonderful to listen to.

Sheer musicality from all. My Prom of the year so far. Work stopped....just sitting back in the workshop and letting the sound flow over me. Bliss

Edit: Maybe I'm feeling a bit down but this performance moved me to tears this afternoon

I was out for most of the day, but I've recorded it and will listen this evening.

I was at the Manchester performance, and I haven't fully recovered from that.

I bought the CDs this morning. I'll be interested to see how they compare with the Prom. A different Judas, as has already been explained + one change in the Apostles' semi-chorus (do we know why?). Has anyone else heard it yet?
