Well I have certainly heard very considerably worse performances of the work from fully professional orchestras.

As to the inter-movement spatterings of applause, yet again I found no problem with them. They did not interrupt the playing and the composer sanctioned not only the performance of individual movements but also of various grouping of selections of them.

I've made a diary note that the NYO/Petrenko, PROM 29, is scheduled for TV broadcast on BBC 4, on 23 August.

I Listened Again to this today, and the Meredith piece whilst fun was a rather a let down, musically.

The commentator (Trelawny?) actually started talking to us 6 minutes into the piece as if it were over (when the audience broke into applause) but soon shut up when it carried on! Basic homework, the programme listing clearly said it was 12 minutes long. You'd think he'd know that, given it was one of the 20 x 12 commissions

Everything clashed on this night. Max 9 live on Radio 3 then dashed in to the televsion lounge for the Messian on BBC4.

Really enjoyed watching this huge 1 hour 20 minute symphony being played with such energy and enthusiasm by the NYO. It seemed that they were looking forward to playing it!

And never seen an Ondes Martinot being played before. Or, indeed, seen one before!

Of course, on the downside, we had to enjoy TEN rounds of applause.

The Anna Meridith- good to watch visually. But not my scene. And Ive boycotted the Olympics and all the 20 x 12 compositions that go with it.

But a very good show! They must have gone into the pub after playing that lot!

          3VS (sorry this is late!!)

            I loved the Messiaen
but this was a poor version of a John Stevens workshop piece IMV

Just watched the recording of this and thought the Messaien was excellent. As someone has already said, the ondes martinot needed to dominate more - though perhaps that was a problem with the TV sound. I'm surprised that so many people here still get worked up about a bit of clapping between movements - does it matter?

Very odd to end with that clapping piece though. I wondered how many hours must have been spent learning and rehearsing it; was it time well spent?

And to end a concert with a high profile conductor with no sight of the conductor? Weird!
