We normally never hear it except for the last few notes of its silly upward scales... maybe you hated it because
        1) it was ( mostly) audible
        and
        2) It was playing at 'Berlin pitch' ( A=445) whereas the rest of the orchestra was sitting at about A=442 ( albeit a bit uncomfortably).
It wasn't my ears then I thought it sounded not quite right! Or maybe it was the orchestra that was wrong!

There is only one piccolo player - Kirsten Spratt - I have ever heard who can make the instrument sound truly beautiful. I heard her play it in 1985, when she was still a student. I haven't heard her since, but she seemed to pursuing a successful career.

            Please enlighten.
Goodness me... this is the Radio 3 live stream of Proms and all other programming, available online from their homepage. The logo (HD with a little "s" inside the D) appears towards the top right corner of the player panel. "HDs" (high definition sound) is their name for it, hardly accurate technically but in fact the highest quality classical webstream available in Europe (it has been used by Berlin DCH, still is by Medici i think...), AAC at 320kbps. It's about equal to FM in definition, spatial and timbral accuracy etc., but has a far superior dynamic range owing to the "Optimod" Processor's dynamic compression applied to FM. It's been running since 2010. Best way of getting it is through iTunes where the stream is totally stable. (iTunes>Radio>Classical>Radio 3 High)...

            Sorry, thought everyone knew...

Ahem. Don't you think the increased frequency range (from under 16kHz to a smidgen over 22kHz) merits a mention? Oh, and no nasty 19kHz artifact from FM's stereo multiplexing.

I didn't know that bit, so thank you, Jayne. When you say it it "totally stable" does that mean using iTunes would be better for those poor souls like me who pay for an "up to 8Mb" service but only get about 1Mb? Would it avoid the drop-outs?
                        Pacta sunt servanda !!!

Flay - Just try it... for me it did stop the drop-outs, but my average speed is around 6mbps+, more later in the evening or at weekends, this is on BT Option 2. Whatever your situation you should get some improvement at least...

(Sorry Bryn and fhg.... way TMI there... just COULDN'T think of a sarcastic dismissal this late at night...)

                            Jayne and Bryn,

Just wondering how you listen to the Radio 3 HD stream? Do you use headphones, or route the signal into a hifi amplifier somehow? I have just acquired an Arcam rDAC which gives very impressive sound; I wonder if you are using something similar?

Hi Dave, best way is to take the digital output from your computer and route it to your DAC, via optical, coax or USB cable - according to the reports and reviews I've read your Arcam should sound best via its asynchronous USB input (probably better than my DacMagic too...). Then just connect DAC to amp as per usual interconnects.

My setup is Macbook>Cambridge DacMagic (via Glassfibre Optical)>preamp (via XLR).
Make sure the Radio 3 HD stream volume is set to maximum or "11". Find and check, on your computer, any "audio midi setup" or any other software/programs which may influence sound quality and switch all adjustments off or set everything to minimum/as low as possible.
If using iTunes, set volume to maximum, and go to Preferences>playback and make sure the "sound enhancement" box is unchecked, i.e. blank.

That's the main stuff... ask again or PM me if anything's not clear...

Please tell me what all this technical jargon has to do with Beethoven's 5th and 6th symphonies.

Isn't there a place on Platform 3 for this?

                                Wildly off-post!
