This is the kind of Prom that they advertise on BBC Radio Humberside.

well they'd need a substitute singer for Jeremy Brett in that too

Rex Harrison's sprechstimme did little to enhance the appreciation of the human voice. Unfortunately this form of cop-out spread to others, like Frankie Howard.

There's a great deal more to the performance of a dramatic work than making the audience "appreciate the human voice". Harrison's Professor Higgins was true, convincing, entirely appropriate and ultimately rather moving.

Along similar lines, are you aware of the version of My Fair Lady starring Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi? A classic!

Tito Gobbi's daughter wrote to me and said how much her father would have loved this - the most flattering mail I have ever received! Wonderful Tito Gobbi an...

That's a lovely bit of editing work. Amusing to read the comment that he should try it with a Tristan soundtrack: the poster is presumably unaware that Callas did actually sing Isolde, albeit in Italian, and there's an off-air recording of her doing it, which is a fascinating listen.

Back on topic, is tonight's Prom being taped for a subsequent TV showing?
