I'm reasonably in favour of musicals being given the operatic treatment, but less keen on "vocalists", who turn out to be microphonists. Good singers should be able to sing over an orchestra that is correctly balanced.

For EA, the BBC Proms listing now shows a fuller cast for Prom 2, though not complete, e.g. the cast members for Harry, Jamie and Zoltan Karpathy aren't listed. The Forum listing (i.e. by me) is updated with the fuller cast, in a slightly tweaked order.

Regarding your point about miking the artists, since it would appear that the full spoken text is included as well, then by definition, everyone on stage has to be miked, so that the dialogue can carry throughout the RAH. It's obviously easier to mike for everything, dialogue and songs, all under one system.

How can this be PROM 2 if the opening night (PROM 1) is on 17th July?

Where can one find the complete Proms 2012 programme schedule?

          Oh dear
I'm definitely not going to this one
but I think you are confusing things somewhat and is that a "law" for ALL singers ?
          it's not (unfortunately) Rheingold

(whatever happened to our "friend" who used to turn up about this time of year and go on endlessly about how singers using microphones was somehow the work of Satan ? )

HS: the Proms begin on Friday 13th (!) July! The 17th is a programme of Strauss, Saariaho and Sibelius!

Many thanks, FHG. The apparent lack of a full list of the 2012 Proms has me somewhat confused!

Anyway, Friday the Thirteenth looks like a very appropriate day to give that opening mish-mash of the Proms season.

That's the way I feel. Microphones don't flatter the human voice.

...Or orchestras. Time to stop buying CDs then & use the savings to go to concerts?

Now that we're into July, you can click on the 'Calendar' link at the top of this page to see the concert titles by date with a link to the full details (thanks to bluestateprommer for entering it all up, as last year). A week in advance, the individual concerts will also appear automatically in the panel at the foot of the forum homepage, again with a link to all the details.

Alternatively, in the forum homepage sidebar on the left, there is a block 'PROMS 2012' with links to two further alternatives: a one-page list where you can scroll down to see the consecutive concerts, and a link to a printable version (in two forms, one print slightly smaller than the other). Thanks to Andrew for doing all the preparatory work for that.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Careful microphone placing - not too close - can work well in recordings. Sheila Armstrong was a singer who EMI recorded too closely on several occasions, yet she sounded wonderful in the concert hall.

Thank you very much for that info, FF.

I have now perused the entire season of Promenade Concerts for 2012.

I can't believe that I would be saying this, but, having searched diligently through the entire schedule, I am actually looking forward to watching the 2012 Olympic Games!

For me, there is a "Stay Away" piece in nearly every programme.

Off topic (apologies) but imagine a world without Dusty Springfield. I doubt she sang unamplified except in the bath....
