Wonder if Barenboim's ever done any Bax.

Hottest night ever in the RAH was August 14 1997 (at least it was for me). Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra in Rimsky's Scheherazade in the giant sauna.

Fine season so far. Next up for me in the hall is the Apostles on Friday.

Chamber Music proms are more impressive for me than RAH stuff. So far.

He probably knows of Bax's existence since he used to play a lot of unusual repertoire with Jackie du Pre in private.

Far too many heavy choral works for my liking - especially backed up like this weekend - like three courses of suet puddings

Schönberg? SUET PUDDING? Ye gods! And, as has been observed elsewhere on this forum, how much of Gurrelieder is "choral" in any case?

                  Spot(ted dick) on!

To be honest I've not really been gripped yet by this year's offerings! For all the Barenboim hype was it that good?

OK 2 suet puddings followed by a syrup sponge !

Poorly placed too - only managed Gurreliede as I was at the Olympics (!) but to be honest anyone of three (although most likely The Apostles) could have done the First night rather than the pretty boring fair we got !

Terrible when that happens, isn't it!

Depends what you mean by "that"? As good as the Krivine or Karajan CD sets, or recordings of Furtwängler? Probably not, IMO. But for anyone going to a Beethoven Symphony Cycle for the first (or last) time, I don't think they'd feel short changed. Spendid, Live Music-making by committed, enthusiastic young performers (and I include the Choir) under the supervision of one of the world's finest Musicians. And with superb, imaginative "couplings" which illustrated perfectly to a modern audience how iconoclastic Beethoven was for his audiences.
Entertaining, educative, uplifting and inspiring: this is what the Proms at their very best can achieve.

My mother's was the lightest, most delectable confection imaginable. I always looked forward to it.

I am afraid I have found the season very dreary - a bad vintage in my view - well at least until Perahia and Haitink arrive !
