Thanks Roehre that's most interesting. I have to admit that Escher is just a name to me and I've never heard any of his music, so will have to try and find some. Putting the odd work or two by these sorts for composers, especially in significant anniversary years, mixing it with more standard repertoire is what the Proms should be doing more of. Giving opportunities for the concert going public to hear something unfamiliar to broaden their musical experiences. Some will react negatively but I expect there will always be some that react positively and seek out these composers and works, which can only ultimately benefit 'classical' music. Of course you will always have to have your 'popular' repertoire only concerts to put bums on seats I acknowledge that, but the uniqueness of the Proms means it is also an opportunity to let some other composers shine (some of whom were more popular and regarded equally as highly as more well known composers have been).
I wonder if there is any way that RW could be persuaded to remove one of his essential classics in favour of Coleridge-Taylor etc at this late stage?

Sorry, have just come on so don't know if this has been addressed: Where can I see online a daily programme for the Proms that lists all the Proms with the works and the performers TOGETHER, so I don't have to jump from link to link? Many thanks for any help.

How many of you think that the days of Hollywood, musicals and now Wallace & Grommit etc are here to stay in the BBC Proms? There will be more of this along with "world music" and the classical western theme will slowly wither and we will be told it's "old and not popular". Of course those who programme the Proms will deny this. but they always do as with other cultural events. Eventually it happens and there will need to be campaigns to resurrect a classical theme, if there's any of us out there to lead it.

I'm working on a single sheet blog for the whole season - I haven't completed highlighting the composers' names yet, but it's here.

I will also produce a printable version. When it's done I'll post a message.

A higher number of tempting programmes than in recent years.
Delighted that Le martyre de St Sebastien is finally getting a Proms airing, it has always struck me as being the epitome of a Proms work. Also Pelleas et Melisande, a gorgeous crepuscular masterpiece. I'm seeing Les Troyens at Covent Garden, so will pass on this. It's good to see the ROH back at the Proms though. The other operatic must is Nixon in China, a wonderfully invigorating experience whose final act still baffles me. I'll give Peter Grimes and Figaro a miss though.

I gravitated to the dangerously beautiful soundworld Berg rapidly after taking up listening to serious music, so the violin concerto is a must. Can this performance possibly compete with the new Faust/Abbado release, which must be destined for some award or other?

I saw Haitink conduct Bruckner 9 (with the LPO?) in the early 1980's, which remains the most moving orchestral concert I have ever attended. Hearing the Vienna Phil in this work is an alluring prospect.

The highlighting of Boulez is welcome, though for home listening. As is the Beethoven cycle, which is welcome, after all some will be encountering these works for the first time. It is surprising to me that complete cycles have occurred so infrequently. And no clashes with the Lord's Test!

As last year, there will be a link in the homepage sidebar, which may be as convenient as a bookmark.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The proms web site seems to be a bit of a shambles. Hope the concerts are better organised!

I'm still more than a little concerned that I might be going to a music festival which is a "mish mash" and not know what a "mish mash" is ?
This might be a little embarrassing as i'm not sure what to do when we get to the "mish" ?

( I didn't know this kind of thing took place in a public arena ? )

Yours is less cluttered and more aesthetically pleasing Andrew.

It must also be a labour of love

                            It is greatly appreciated

Great list indeed, but I prefer Andrew's as it gives the timings and -as amateur51 rightly remarks- is less cluttered and more aesthetically pleasing

They're both a significant improvement on the BBC's own listings. Many thanks Andrew and Paul.
