    Well I think it's a very tempting programme, all-in-all.

The only potential fly in my ointment - let's hope the BBC Sound Engineers or the outside contractors have sorted out their microphone placements & gizmos this year

There has been one work by Salvatore Sciarrino performed at the Proms (1989). Which would suggest, among other things, an over-reliance on this year's featured 'avant-garde' great, Pierre Boulez, to do the BBC's thinking for them in such matters. That's just three very important composers (to put it as neutrally as possible. I'd say great composers, but hey ho); the iceberg is, as it were, sizable in its non-presence.
My #59 was in response to previous comments, not this, John.

I should have phrased that better John, as I agree with you and its my fault for not proof reading, it should have read, this year there is the collection......off his back for a few more years, along with the usual proms commissions etc... I also forgot to add at the end - Basically if reflects standard R3 fare, the 'CFM style favourites, some of the 'essential classics', the early music to reflect these programmes and a bit of avant-garde to reflect Hear and Now. The continuing concentration on big name composers between 1700-1920, which forms the main-stay of much of the day-time repertoire on R3.

I did get your drift, and pretty much agree with all you say. I'm not as down on it as you are - there are some concerts I'm looking forward to. If the Proms is to be protected at the expense of Radio 3 generally then that surely should be questioned (a separate issue, perhaps).

I'll see what I can do. (It might take a few days, as I'm recovering from a hard drive failure!)

This season continues the Proms' inexplicable neglect in recent years of the music of Haydn and (despite the Schubertfest) Schubert's music as well.

Agreed - I will be ordering my season ticket as soon as permitted. Enough 20th century music to keep me happy. Even a John Cage evening without 4' 33". DSCH, Schoenberg. And a Jazz Prom with the national youth Jazz orchestra.

But for me promming is one of the few ways I can listen to music. I can sit down, stand up, choose who to be next to, and generally please myself.

Likewise there are 3 concerts I wouldn't mind attending if they don't sell out. I've never actually been to the Proms so I may take the plunge this year.

I have had a quick look through and looks on paper, at least, to be very promising. Of course von Dittersdorf suffers the neglect we have so long come to expect

No thank you..we have had quite enough of Schubert to last us well into 2017.

On a separate note...presentation. Is there still no simple way, like there used to be in the past, to see what works by a particular composer are being performed? Sure, you can key in the composer's name and the get a long screenful of every Prom featuring that composer...but then you have to wade through tons of bumph to get the information that you want. Really disappointed that the same goons who designed last year's user-unfriendly guide are still there.

                        That's a great line!

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I've just had a run through and agree there's plenty here to please. Those VPO/Haitink and BPO/Rattle concerts look fantastic!

I'm considering going down to book in person. Does anyone who has done it know what time is best to start the queue?

Have they finally dumped those annoying and not very good PC insertions into the Henry Wood Fantasia? No mention of Bob Chilcott in the listings.
