HA! And from that article about one hotel ""We originally increased our prices by an average of 80% for the Games," says Conan Gupta, one of the hotel's directors" Serves them right that they are now having to slash prices as they have no bookings. Also, I hope those Landlords who chucked tenants out hoping to make a fast buck from rental during the Olympics are now bitterly regretting it. I've been looking and a grotty 2 bed flat in Elephant & Castle is available for rent at a very inflated price of £6,000 for the duration of the games!! So well done Petrushka and others for forecasting this would happen and delaying booking hotel rooms for the Proms

I first became aware of the phenomenom of 'normal' tourists staying away as long ago as 1976 after reading a newspaper report following the Montreal Olympics and have seen similar reports in the aftermath of all subsequent sites for the Games. I long ago filed away a mental memo to the effect of looking out for the same thing happening should the Olympics ever come to London.

When all is said and done the Olympic venues capacity will not be so much more than if Spurs and Chelsea are playing at home on the same Saturday with perhaps a Rugby match at Twickenham and horse racing at Kempton Park thrown in as well to make up the numbers.

The greed and gullibility of people should never be underestimated.

I'm off to the Proms on July 23 for a week and still haven't booked hotel room or rail tickets.

Watch the rail tickets. I am making three trips to the Proms. Two of these are either side of the Olympics. No problem with what I expected to pay. However a lot of the cheap tickets for the middle trip had either been sold or withdrawn. I did wonder if they ever existed.

I do a voluntary job at a major leisure venue, and we have been told to expect a fall in numbers this year, not just because of poor weather and recession, but because there is a historical trend for tourists to stay away during the Olympics. The theory is that millions overseas will see the games on TV, and plan to visit London next year.
