I'm also not entirely happy that John Wilson chose to present the film musicals in chronological order. There was a falling off in quality with the advent of films like Dr Doolittle, and this was hard to disguise in spite of the efforts of all concerned.It was a fun evening though, and I'm glad I went -- Bruckner tomorrow!

I went to the pre prom talk and I gathered that this was rather the point - they did fall fall off and Hello Dolly and Doolittle were huge flops (something the TV Christmas schedulers never seemed to be aware of). It wasn't a "song from the shows" concert.

ps I though the "triplet song" was a good example of "dummy-ing" down

Who was the strange woman who entered the auditorium, marched across the entire length of the stage behind the percussion, and exited during the last number on the programme?

My missus was there and reported it to be just some random lady who decided that instead of trying to move along the row to get out via the exit on the East side of the organ, she would cross behind the percussionists and exit on the West side of the organ instead. A RAH usher was seen to "have words" with her sternly afterwards...

For someone who's only too happy to criticise others (indeed, the whole Board/Forum membership) for spewing bile & personalising things, Cavatina is not loath to dish out a bit of bile & personal attack herself. If that's what studying philosophy does for you ... !

Meanwhile, back to the concert. Like some who have posted, I adore Holywood musicals, but I prefer to listen to the music in the context of the film. Hearing it non-stop for an hour and a half (albeit with an interval) is too much of a good thing - especially when the perfoomances are as shouty as they were in the concert (I only managed about 15 minutes, so there might have been more subtle perfromances at other points). There does also seem to have been an awful lot of these 'novelty' proms, but that's perhaps because they just happen to have been on when I've been able to listen; most of the concerts I've wanted to hear have been on when I couldn't.

Well no, Cavatina, it's not a cheap shot, it's completely missing the target. D'you never watch dinosaurs or sci-fi with kids, then discover something in them which draws you back? And some of us never got over seeing realistic dinos on screen for the first time! If you're defending Ms. Derham, problem is she's imposed on us with an obvious lack of knowledge and ability, even to the extent of having a rushed and often unclear vocal delivery.

I'm only an elitist about quality - I hate bad sci-fi and dinosaur movies as much as any 8-year old.
I grew up listening to every kind of music from classic musicals to 60s pop, dad used to practice them beneath my bedroom to play on request at his club. But some musics don't seem to respond as well to deliberate domestic playback. All this, is, of course, very subjective!


[Personally, I'd never dream of watching such s*** movies. If you're going to be an elitist, for God's sake be consistent and do it right.
