Saturday Matinee Prom 2: 20th August at 3.00 p.m. (PMD, Aperghis, Birtwistle)

A concert of contemporary musical encounters. The new piano concerto by Greek-born French composer Georges Aperghis takes its inspiration from the technique of filming dialogue with shot and reverse shot, while Harrison Birtwistle vividly retells the Biblical story of Jacob wrestling with the Angel. Meanwhile, Peter Maxwell Davies relfects on a sonnet by Michelangelo in a work specially composed for the BBC Singers.

David Atherton conducts the London Sinfonietta and BBC Singers with Nicolas Hodges, a pianist who excels in cutting-edge contemporary music. Andrew West and Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts take the challenging parts of Jacob and the Angel.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies: Il rozzo martello
Georges Aperghis: Champ-Contrechamp (BBC Commission; World Premiere)
Sir Harrison Birtwistle: Angel Fighter (UK premiere)

    Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts (tenor)
    Andrew Watts (Counter tenor)
    Nicolas Hodges (Piano)
    BBC Singers
    London Sinfonietta
    David Atherton (conductor).

This concert seems to have dropped out of Radio 3 and iPlayer broadcasts.

Does anyone know of a radio/ TV broadcast?

I was a little surprised to see the name of Andrew West a pianist related to an old friend, cast in the first post. He is known for taking part in experimental works at times but I assume he is not singing in this prom. Later Andrew WATTS is mentioned. Please clarify if possible

I only ask because I would listen if it were Andrew West, definitely not otherwise.

Very much looking forward to this concert. Can anyone tell me if tickets for Cadogan are obtainable at the venue, and if so, does one have to queue, as at the AH, and if so how long... if there's a "usual" queuing time? Or does one have to go to the AH? This'll be my first Cadogan Hall Prom, having only attended two of the 3 lunchtime jazz freebies, but I can vouch for the excellence of the acoustic there.

I'm not sure about advanced sales from RAH, but you can buy your ticket from the Cadogan box office the same day. The earlier you get there, the better the seat-- learned that the hard way once.

As the Haitink concert will be a sell-out I do not think it will be feasible to go to this Cadogan Hall concert and expect to get a good place in the day queue at the Albert Hall.

Hmm., I'm sure those who have made it to all of the Proms thus far will find a way

But going to another (prom) concert is a perfectly good reason for being out of the queue, so there's nothing to stop you going to the RAH and getting a raffle ticket before the matinee, the day tickets for that are available from 10am

Well, I'm not sure how it works for the day queue-- but in the season queue, I always make a trip to the RAH before I go Cadogan, check in with others already there, leave a marker (gravel in the shape of my initial) and come back for my ticket after it's over.

Actually, people have been more than fair to me since I'm absolutely horrible about getting back to the queue promptly. Between getting lost on the side-streets and lingering at Partridges--especially on the weekends when they have their outdoor food fair!-- I really ought to be dinged to the back. Oh well, try again Saturday!

Will the newly commisioned work be a rose between two thorns?
