Yes, an excellent Firebird. I groaned on seeing this old chestnut programmed yet again this year (along with The Rite - sorry Threni!), but have to eat my words. A fine orchestra and conductor - they were even better overall the following night.

I found the new work more amusing than anything else, trying to imagine the sweat pouring off the quartet as they tried to make their feverish fiddling heard above the orchestra in such an unsuitable acoustic.

In response to the question about other works for string quartet and orchestra - John Casken composed Rest-ringing in 2005 for the Lindsays and the Hallé. It was broadcast on R3.
