Ooh, it's MUCH more interesting than that - everything Russ Andrews sells is on a 60-day trial, so you can listen at leisure - and send it back if you want... evidently not everyone does, so - go figure....

I didn't - wouldn't - try or buy that one, but I daren't say anything about my (VERY intriguing) cabling adventures... certainly not here!

But I shouldn't be here now, not if I'm to make tonight's concert - see ya!

      NO DON'T it's a pile of wooooooo
If one has a big enough south facing roof it should be possible to put PV panels on, and also get some funding. A good inverter might give better AC than the grid, though that would only work during the day. Alternatively, use battieries and other matching kit.

With some careful selection in the 2nd hand market, an Audio Analogue Puccini amp and pair of Sonus Faber Concertino speakers should be doable for less than £1,000

I have recently upgraded Virgin cable TV to a TiVo box which unfortunately does not have an analogue audio output and my amplifier doesn’t have an optical input. Not wanting to rely on the TV’s speakers it seemed like a good excuse to purchase a Dacmagic 100 for £169-95 (no more expensive than a mega boxed set!).
I depend almost entirely on playing music files from my hard drive using Media Monkey and the next challenge was to make a USB connection to the DacMagic. For USB2 this requires a driver download from Cambridge Audio which went fine. Installation requires the DacMagic device to be connected and turned on but the installer insisted that the device wasn’t there. There is a, not very obvious, trick to switch the DacMagic from USB1 to USB2 (hold the source button down while powering up). It took a few hours to realise this but the installation then went well.
I am now playing FLAC/MP3 files using WASAPI and there is a significant improvement to the sound quality - more spacious and richer toned. I am not a Techie so now feeling smug. Thought the above might be useful for anyone going the same way.

I don't know your speakers, CD Player, or Amp. I will say that for what I have gathered your budget to be I would consider a DAC. There are outstanding DACs for in the 500-2000 $ or pound range and for the money it may be the biggest upgrade that you can make. You also didn't mention if you wish to upgrade your analog (i.e., turntable) or not...
