Kudos for figuring that out, ts
In response to Ferney, iTunes is simply awful for indexing Classical Music.
Has any one tried the Roon software?

I don't know iTunes - not missing much apparently - but online databases (CDDB, Freedb) seem to be generally not geared up for classical music in their structure. They lack a "composer" field and the composer often appears as "artist". I download the details of all CDs I acquire to a database on my computer and it is very useful and time-saving to be able to let the online databases do the donkey work of data entry but fine tuning is nearly always necessary to a greater or lesser extent

I've signed up for a year's subscription, but should probably have gone down the lifetime subscription route.

It's not perfect, but it does a good job of showing the correct meta data, and organising tracks into 'works' such as symphonies etc. There's a free trial available, I'd recommend trying it.

Indeed - and I can't imagine it's any better for other Musics: are there really great numbers of people going around saying to themselves, "I think I'll listen to songs whose title begins with 'H' today"?

              Hi Steve

Many thanks for the heads up. I just gave it a quick try. Initial impressions very favourable, very fast to collate and bring together everything, graphics, track details etc.

Then the acid test...choose a classical piece of music...Beethoven 6th in my iTunes library. Choose Play. And out of the speakers comes...well, certainly not Beethoven 6th. Go to iTunes to check the playlist there and it is fine.

So for me, Roon has fallen at the first hurdle.

I've got a Fiio x5, which, though it doesn't come with onboard storage, allows you to fit 2 micro SD cards, so i've stuck in two 128gb cards. It plays flac, ape etc, and is one of the best sounding players out there. I've also got a kilimanjaro 2 mini amp attached to it, further boosting the sound.

I've never had it play a different piece of music from the one selected. The only time it played anything odd was when I had the 'radio' feature turned on (that's nothing to do with internet radio), with that option switched on it plays another piece of music when the current one ends - not something I've ever wanted.

You may have already made up your mind about Roon, but it might be worthwhile adding a post to their forum - https://community.roonlabs.com/ - I've never heard of anyone having the problem you describe so it might be a set up issue of some kind.
