I've heard good things about some of the FiiO stuff. However I do get disturbed by false claims, such as this:

Though DSP EQ can target narrow frequency bands, this comes at the cost of noticeable phase distortion.
AFAIK using DSP can give much better accuracy of a filter response, both with respect to amplitude and phase. If the DSP designers don't do it right of course then things can go wrong, but suggesting that DSP is going to necessarily introduce objectionable phase distortion seems to me to be a significant misrepresentation of the truth. In any case, as long as the phase distortion is the same between the left and right channels it was shown a long while ago that it wasn't likely to have a major perceived effect. In this respect audio is different from image processing. In image processing it's the phase which has the dominant effects on perception.

This raises a good point - it is largely the DAC that counts for sound quality, and Fiio DACs are top notch.

Now watch someone tell us all DACs and all amplifiers, therefore all PMPs sound the same.

However I do get disturbed by false claims, such as this:
I have to say that anything I've bought in my entire life has always had some sort of dodgy claim associated with it. I bought a ricketty 1960s bicycle once for 60 euro and I couldn't bargain with the seller because he said, it looked so bad, it would never get stolen .. which surely is a value in itself. In the end, I nearly killed myself because the brakes were totally ineffective in the water. Nevertheless, the old leather saddle was already worth 40 euro on its own.

What I mean to say by this digression is that the personal value one attaches to -let's say- complicated, possessions such as bicycles and music players is not straightforward, and some sort of singular, misguided judgement can be expected. In fact, anything that appears "too good to be true" is probably wall-to-wall bullshit.

This is the way I presented myself to my would-be wife when I was still of marrying age, and she took exception to my isolated - but still substantial - deficiencies, and that's why I'm still single and have the ability to buy a fiio x3 all for myself.

probably the wong thread really, but I could do with picking brains on ordering of " tracks" on my Sansa Clip/Micro SD cards.

I have synced the Miaskowsky complete symphonies onto a micro SD card.

if I open the Sansa as a device on my laptop the tracks seem to be ordered like this:

                  01-01-Symphony no 1 in C Minor
                  and so on.

On my the Sansa, I can access the music either through a folder, where the tracks are ordered correctly, or through the main listing, where they are grouped together as a single album,, but ordered differently, with works all jumbled up.
the first 3 tracks on the " random" list are numbered 01-10, 01-20, 01-30, ( see above for the numbering for the first track) so it looks as if they are ordered by those numbers.

any ideas on how to reorder the "main" listing , so that it follows the correct ordering as per the folder?

                  Thanks.
( if anybody understands what I wrote, I will be pleased and amazed !!)

I am having a little trouble understanding what you wrote, ts. Let me ask a very basic question: Is 'Sansa' the name of the manufacturer of the micro SD Card, or is that the name of the player into which you have loaded the card?

Its a Sansa Clip MP3 player.
I'm using standard Micro SD cards.

Having had a slightly deeper look, I can see that if I open the File Location on my laptop, ( in Media Player) for the albums, that the columns are titled:

Name: Track No: Title: Contributing Artist:

the first column, is the one that has the tracks listed as above, starting 01-01-Symphony in C Minor.
Column 3, title, just has the tracks listed by name, EG Symphony No 1 in C Minor. 1.

I think the problem is that the MP3 player is listing them using the numbers but in a different way , also as described in my first post.

Sorry, probably not very clear, it isn't easy describing these issues.
In the end , I can go to the " Folder" location on my player, and it has the works listed in a workable order. It is just a bit of a recurring problem, ( had the same thing with some Schoenberg) that I would like to solve.

It sounds a bit like the problem I had with i-Tunes, where tracks moved from my library to a playlist would appear in alphabetical order? So that I had hours of fun one afternoon manually shifting the tracks on Cosi fan Tutti into the order that they appear in the Opera! Someone on the Forum kindly pointed out to me that if I went to "Songs" in the top right corner of the playlist page, and selected "Sort by" from the drop-down menu and changed it from "Manual Order" to "Album Order", everything would magically appear as it does on the CD and in the Library. (Quite who at Apple thought that alphabetical order as the default setting would be a good idea - and which part of a long staff meeting he [and it will be a "he"] made such a suggestion so that everyone else there couldn't be bothered to think such a feature through - is a matter of conjecture. My own conjecture is a mole from Microsoft. I mean seriously - WHO listens to ANY Music in alphabetical order????

Probably no use at all to you, ts - but a good rant before breakfast really sets me up for the day

This kind of thing has always made me apprehensive about throwing in my lot with Apple and iTunes. I hear "it just works" "we never have any problems with the Mac" and "oh, it all gets quietly fixed in the background overnight.." Except that, we hear about problems on forums -such as this instance.
With iTunes (although I acknowledge I am speaking as an outsider, I've only trialled it, not very extensively) its never been friendly for classical music as far as I can see (what with different performances and recording dates, and as you highlight works such as operas), But I think you've set your expectations quite high - to Apple they're "tunes".

                            ... or, even "songs"!

I never used to have the alphabetical problem on earlier versions of i-Tubes: it only started after one of their "improvements" (as a result of which, I've stopped accepting "Updates"). It just led me to think that there must have been a kid ten years or so ago who bought a Kaiser Chiefs CD who used to have to reprogramme the playing order of the tracks ("songs") so that they played in alphabetical order and who thought to himself "This is a real faff! When I grow up, I'm going to make sure albums play in alphabetical order on their own"!

But - back to teamsaint ...

well I hope we all feel a little better after that .

Anyway, what I cannot understand is why these "tracks" (seems to be the only word available) follow the two different orders , on the same card, but when approached via different routes on the same device.
Fortunately in this case, I have a way to access them the way I want, and in general I find media player/MP3 player very user friendly, but I also find that I have better things to do, ( Like actually listen to some Miaskovsky) than faff around all evening.

                              But further advice welcome.

                              Edit:

If there is anybody out there interested and/or awake, I have made a discovery, if not found a solution.

The origin of the problem I think, is that I downloaded the Miaskovsky from Amazon Cloud.
It seems that amazon Cloud adds an 01 number to the track numbering.
so the tracks on the 16 CDs are logically numbered 1 to 120 ( or whatever), but get a prefix added. For some reason these get read differently depending on which route I use to get to them on the MP3 player.

So the answer I think would be to get rid of all the 01 prefixes, and then the numbering should work either way.

This would mean renumbering over 100 tracks, when I already have a route that works fine, so I might not bother.
                                But a lesson learned.
Until I need it again, by which time I'll have forgotten.....
Right, must check that RIAS 2VS 4 -disc set, to see if it is the same problem.
