iTunes, Radio 3 and Radio 4

I struggled to find BBC Radio 3 in iTunes today, but eventually managed it. It's not so bad once you realise you have to set Preferences to show the Internet options, and then it appears under Classical. You also have to restart iTunes to force the preferences.

However I can't find BBC Radio 4. Someone's done a good job of hiding it.

It's filed under 'Comedy'. No, I don't know why either.

Just tried today, and indeed there is something under 'Comedy', but it's actually Radio 4 Extra.

I did find Radio 4 under News/Talk Radio. In my iTunes 3 channels come up.

BBC Radio 4 Low Radio for curious minds
BBC Radio 4 LW High Radio for curious minds
BBC Radio 4 LW Low Radio for curious minds

Actually this also seems mad, as the R4 Low is what most of us would know as Radio 4 - but the bit rate is only 48kbps.
The R4 LW High currently has cricket, and is at a bit rate of 128 kbps.

The streams appear to be AAC encoded - low and higher bit rate versions. Quite why cricket merits a higher bit rate I can't figure.
Perhaps doesn't really matter too much for predominantly speech output, though programmes such as Desert Island Discs on the regular R4 channel would do better with a higher bit rate stream. It is, of course, possible that bit rates change depending on the material "broadcast" - though I suspect it doesn't.

The R3 streams are denoted BBC Radio 3 Low and High respectively, and are at 48 kbps and 320 kbps AAC variants within iTunes.

The iTunes radio listing seems a bit deficient. I have built an iTunes playlist containing the main BBC stations. You can get it here: https://sites.google.com/a/gurcms.or.../BBC_Radio.xml

In iTunes (at least the Windows version, but I think the MAC will be the same) select File>Library>Import Playlist... and select the BBC_Radio.xml file. You should then have access to both high and low versions of Radio 1 to Radio 6 with all the versions I know about.

        Hope this works!
