    Blu-ray to amplifier.

At a local music society they have a standard set up of an amplifier, CD player and set of speakers. I was wondering if I can easily connect a Blu-ray player to this. I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Presumably this is so that you can play Blu-ray discs and play the Blu-ray sound through the amp and speakers?

The Blu-ray will have HDMI out, and probably an optical sound output. It may have a line level audio output, in which case you just connect that to your amplifier.

If the Blu-ray doesn't have an analogue sound output, and if the amplifier doesn't have an HDMI or optical input, you would need either to take an analogue sound output from the TV to connect to the amplifier, or alternatively get a toslink cable and an optical to analogue converter (you can google for more info) which will give you a line level sound signal to connect to the amplifier.

This may sound more complicated than it actually is. I went down this route a few weeks ago when I bought a Blu-ray player, and found it all straightforward. Have a look and see what connections are available. I'm sure there will be lots more help available here if you need it.

Hiya mangerton, Yes I want to play Blu-ray sound through the amp and speakers. The Blu-ray player has a LAN (100) terminal, a HDMI OUT jack and a DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL) jack.

It probably depends on the Blu-Ray player. Some have HDMI, optical and phono outputs, but possibly not all do.

The simplest connection will be via analogue phono outputs, and presumably the player will need to be configured to output a stereo "mix". Do you have a player in mind?

Is the Blu-Ray one of the new fangled ones with in-built Wi-Fi?

Sorry - I thought this was a CB Radio enthusiasts thread.

The DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL) jack carries the sound output in digital form in the same way as the optical cable I mentioned. A digital to analogue converter will still be required. If it's not built in to the amplifier, you'll need to get an external one.

I don't know about Stanfordian's, obviously, though the presence of a LAN terminal would seem to indicate it is.

Mine has a LAN terminal, and wi-fi. This allows me to take music, video, and photographs from my computer and reproduce them on TV and sound system. I've found this quite useful for checking edited videos on a full size screen before burning a disc.

Hiya Dave, Yes it has in-built Wi-Fi, but I use an ethernet cable.

AS Dave 2k2 suggests, this could be tricky as the player will need configuring for stereo-audio only... I've not used blu-ray for anything but films, but the audio DACs which cope with 192/24 over HDMI probably only exist in your dreams. With Optical I guess you would have to set it to PCM out...

I was thinking that possibly a Wi-Fi device such as an Apple Express unit might work, but it would require compatible software, and that might not work as you probably can't configure the Blu-Ray to output the data in a suitable format. It was just a thought though. If we know what model it is we could check the manuals I suppose.

Thanks so much for the interest everyone. As I see it I think that I need a Digital to Analogue Audio Converter unit with an R/L cable to the amplifier. To connect the Audio Converter unit to the Blu-ray player I need either a Coaxial cable or a Toslink cable. I was wondering what the difference is between using the Coaxial cable or a Toslink cable?

I've just had a look at mine (Panasonic) and the audio output can be set to stereo or multi-channel, and the sound output via HDMI is switched off when the toslink connection is being used.

Dave2002 - your #13 - The wifi connection (on my Blu-ray anyway) is for getting info into the player for display, not for sending it out.
