Yes, it works fine. But it also scarily provides an option for anyone to reset your password and boot into your computer and access your data.

So in the last couple of days i've encountered what seems to be a very common problem with Mavericks and it's "Local Keychain"
tedious and very tricky to fix even by doing a reinstall

It seems that you really need to remember the password you used when you first got your computer regardless of how many versions of OSX you have upgraded to since then.................

I won't bore you all with the details unless someone needs them (but I do think i've now found a solution that works)

I wasn't bothering to read a thread referring to 'Yosemite', and then I suddenly had a brainwave: Why, that sound just like the kind of name that ... So I looked. And it was. And I'm sticking where I am :-)

Some programs - like GIMP - need an upgrade before one has been developed. I'm still struggling with the GIMP Mavericks version ...

Some programs, GIMP being the obvious one, are named in a way that I can't use them in Primary schools
(The Rasterbator is another excellent thing that I find myself unable to use)

            Thanks for telling me
I haven't used it since upgrading and was planning to later this week

It seems it is working with Yosemite

Crowd-sourced application compatibility for macOS, iOS and Windows.

I downloaded the Mavericks/Yosemite version and it seems ok on my machine

                I used the Sourceforge download

So today is the day when i've decided to completely wipe everything on the Mavericks laptop and go back to Snow Leopard
completely clean install which will hopefully get rid of all the nonsense i've been having with Mavericks

I think Apple made a huge mistake with it, looking about and talking to folks who understand these things at a deep level (including the relative who is a professor of computer science) it seems that there have been problems for users like me since the start.
Many folks have abandoned MacMail also as it's become completely unreliable.
What is a bit irritating is that these are the kinds of issues that used to happen all the time with Windows, all the driver nonsense that one had to fiddle with to get things like audio to work well……

See what happens then (there's a cloned version of the laptop if it all goes wrong……..)

I keep getting invitations to convert to Yosemite, which I have refused to act upon. I'm still happy with 10.6.8 - am I missing something?

Not Windows 8 or 8.1, that's for sure.

                          I've never used Windows.

I think it all depends on what you do. There have been a number of compatibility issues with Yosemite (GRM tools didn't work to start with nor did third party plugins in Logic) but most folks I know who had gone to Mavericks have now gone on to Yosemite.
BUT unless you really need the things it offers (like updates and new versions) and what you have works for you then its probably not worth bothering with.

Agreed. Some older software does not work with OS versions past 10.6.8, but people who aren't using such programs may find it convenient to upgrade to Mavericks and/or Yosemite. I haven't bothered.

These stories are just so reminiscent of Windows 'upgrades'.
