Converting to Mavericks

I'm on 10:8:5 - does anyone know of a programme that will open old Clarisworks text files? Cheers!

Yes - it's either Appleworks or Clarisworks. Seriously, Appleworks ran on OS X up to version 10.6, after which it no longer ran. I still have one machine with that OS. I also have a very old Powerbook which still has the Clarisworks/Appleworks running on OS 8!

There were also versions which ran on Windows, and you might be able to pick them up on eBay.

It is claimed that there are compatible and newer programs, but I personally don't believe this to be the case. There are indeed newer programs, but compatibility is not by any means perfect, nor is the user interface so easy to use. I think it is a shame that Apple binned these programs, in particular the drawing program, as after I initially struggled to get to grips with it, I gradually found that it does certain drawing tasks much better than most of the simpler or more complex competitor products.

You could PM me if you have a small number of non-personal files to open, and I might be able to convert them to a format you can read. If you really need to work with the files, I might still be able to help.

I don't use the facility, but spaces are still available in Mavericks. See this link...

Oh, no! Another headache. I've only just realised that Mission Control was not in the dock on the iMac - as it was on the MBP which I bought with Mavericks already installed.

I created an alias from Utilities and parked it in the dock but it doesn't display properly. If I click on it, this is what I see:



There's a dark background, a small icon at the top which is for the dashboard, and a small and large image of the (empty) pale green background which is the colour of my desktop background. No sign of Mission Control.

The dock at the bottom shows the MC shortcut, fourth from the left.

Thats very kind but I've also kept an old OS on an external drive and I run off that from time to time. I'd hoped there was a programme around that would save me the inconvenience! Cheers!

I periodically go round that loop, but I've never spotted anything with sufficient compatibility, hence my slightly negative response. Your approach would seem now to be cheap and effective - I assume that booting from the external drive is simple enough - it's a long while since I did anything like that.

I find LibreOffice buggy on my MBP, which is a puzzle as I don't have the same problems with Open Office which is very similar. Perhaps my installation became corrupted. I'd be surprised if this works in the way you suggest, but maybe it can read the text files. Good luck, though, and do report back.

Ominous silence about my malfunctioning Mission Control. Can I just download Mavericks again, and hope for the best? (The same happened when I tried to access it direct from Utilities)

FF, try clicking on the upper left desktop icon and then running Mission control again. It looks as I'd it's showing you what's running in the empty desktop (ie the desktop shown on the top right).

Yes to the second bit - when I clicked on the MC icon in the dock I got the view as in the jpeg above. But once I click on the dashboard icon I'm taken to the normal full screen Dashboard view - and the dock with the Mission Control icon has disappeared, so how do I run it again?

Will it help if I disable the Dashboard by:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled - boolean true ?

IGNORE - I did it anyway and it did nothing

IN FACT: I may have been confusing Mission Control with Launchpad on my new(er) MBP which opens to a display of application icons. Now I've found that I've put that in the Dock too

Yes, you're right, it crashes continually, but it does at least let me open Clariwork WP files and let me save them in text format, which is all I needed.Then its just a matter of deleting all the formatting info!

Steve - I'm both happy and embarrassed now - I really did misunderstand what Mission Control did and confused it with Launchpad.

I can't really see the use of Mission Control though as a replacement for Spaces, but the iMac screen is big enough to put two documents side by side (and more overlapping docs/files, of course) and tabbed browsers make it just as easy to move from page to page.

Yes - F3 brings up the Mission Control view (and F4 the dashboard).
