Not just old software though which is rather ridiculous
as Bryn says its like the nonsense that one goes through with Windows "upgrades"

Sorry, this is OT, but in the early days of DAB I had a Psion Wavefinder which ran under W98SE and could save several DAB mp2s simultaneously. Then XP came along, and that would not run the Wavefinder's software. I gave up on the Wavefinder and got a Pure Bug, which could at least save one DAB mp2 at a time. Then Windows Vista came along. That was said to run the Wavefinder software but had far too many other incompatibilities to be worth installing. I have never got round to trying it with Windows 7 or 8. These days there's the iPlayer for much higher audio quality than DAB or FM has to offer. We used to have an Internet Café here, nestled below what was then the 3M building (a major wind trap, currently being demolished). The Internet Café was neatly named the 3W Café. We regulars there used to have a standing joke: "Why is Microsoft Windows like a virus? Because new ones are always being introduced to mess up your PC."

        I used the Sourceforge download

Not sure if they are all the same build ?
On the other hand, I uninstalled the version (of GIMP) I had and went to this website and all is now well. :-)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

          Ridiculous?

Are you suggesting that some older software is not worth using, or are you simply reminding us that changes in the operating environment can also affect new software?

At a personal level I have several Apple machines, and different OS versions. The only Mac OS I've not tried yet AFAIK is Yosemite. However I have not attempted to upgrade any of the older OS versions on machines which I own.

i was previously forced to upgrade a machine in a work environment, not because of administrative dictat, but because IIRC it became impossible to print documents on a shared networked printer. The printer was made to work with a newer OS version and seemed incapable of working with an earlier one - Snow Leopard. It just happened - at first the printer didn't work at all, but gradually the driver code was "improved" by the manufacturer so it would eventually at least work with Lion.

Nothing wrong with old software at all
but bringing out a new OS that is incompatible with your own current software (which is what happened with Yosemite and Logic audio) seems a bit careless.
