OfCom White Space spectrum Consultation - and other thongs

FWIW - not directly related to R3 but to DTT/Freeview. A few of you may be interested in these proposals to release the DTT spectrum to other users than broadcasters on a licence exempt basis - ie anyone can transmit services of more or less any kind in the DTT frequencies without a formal licence by building a suitable transmission network.

The techies among you might also enjoy the accompanying technical report that runs to 167 pages!!! It tells a lot about the UK Planning Model used for all radio/wireless services incuding DAB and so might shed a couple of photons on some of our DAB coverage discussions.

    See it all here:

This comes hard on the heels of the proposals to shift Freeview yet again [it was recently shifted to make way for 4G in 800MHz band, now being built] out of the current 700MHz [to make way for even more 4G] and be squeezed into a smaller block of spectrum. IE all existing services to be transmitted in quite a bit less spectrum. Likely around 2018 or so. There are also proposals to introduce a new costing model to set the pricing of spectrum including that used by PSB - see here:

Government seem adamant that they want to squeeze PSB services in favour of commercially more lucrative ones.

I'll have a look at this this evening. Meanwhile, I'll just say there's something about the word "stakeholders"......

Well PSB does broadcast most TV twice (DTT, DST) and radio three times (FM/DAB, DTT, DST).
