I suppose we all use the forum differently.
Sorry, I misunderstood - I thought you were saying that you didn't know which forum they were on, whereas you clearly meant you didn't find the fact relevant. :-)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sorry I was not clearer. Yes, the individual forum does not bother me. Probably makes me a very superficial forum member.

I suspect some posters would rather not find that out, so that they can accidentally happen on some particularly reprehensible thread on Platform 3 and then open a special thread to express their shock and disgust.

Probably giving a hostage to fortune here, but I view the forum from my desk top at home (as now) my ipad, and my desktop at work. They all know exactly where I am and what I've looked at, even after a week's absence from work, as yesterday.

I don't know how that works with cookies, then. That would be connected with your log-in info. How does that work? (I checked the setting and it was on cookies rather than the database: I'd better look again ...).

A motoring forum to which I contribute always knows which comments are unread by me, even after quitting Firefox. This forum is the only one where this happens - I don't find it a problem though, so I'm not concerned to find the reason.

                    I won't explain, then

Except to say, yes, it is set to cookie-based, which is the least processor intensive setting. But I don't really understand any of it very well ...

I have expounded my entire knowledge on the subject

This does not usually stop members of this forum from continuing to expound.

I've just had a thread show up as red when the last post was one I wrote myself!

I get this all the time now. Having just returned to the forum (but not logged out) after an hour or so all of the messages I've read today, including my own, are in red. At first I thought this issue was to do with my new laptop but clearly it isn't. I'm finding it a bit annoying!

Don't you find that a bit spooky? Not to mention worrying in our surveillance society.
