Re msg 5 and others.
It may all have become irrelevant now. I tried unplugging the monitor to use a LED/LCD TV instead with a VGA cable so that I could then dump the CRT monitor. Doesn't work properly. Replugging the original CRT monitor back in - Windows doesn't start up properly - the whole thing seems to have gone west. I can't get back into Windows, so I'm probably just going to have to evaluate how much stuff was on the drive, and either keep the machine etc. somewhere else, until I can waste even more time trying to recover it, or alternatively take the drive out, and dump the rest, and just hope the drive is readable on something somewhere later on.
I think there are major issues, probably with any of the OSs available now, though you may guess that my dislike of Windows continues.
