Is anyone on the new BT email page. I need help.

In spite of help from BT's helplime, some things remain a mystery. I triedto add something to my favourites in the old way. The item has appeared FIVE times along the top of my BT page and I and visitor couldn't delete four ofthe five.

Helpful lady at BT admitted it still needs a bit of sorting out at their end.

Not quite sure how much you use the BTYahoo site, or whether you don't have an ordinary email client - like Outlook Express..

What do you have stored there? What are the 'Favourites' that appear on your BT page? Favourite what?

I'm not sure what saly means? I am with BT, I wanted to continue with Outlook Express but after a while it all went toes up as BT kept forcing me back to Yahoo, so I'm now with BT Yahoo mail (which basically, is a bit naff and simplistic after OE) but I don't have 'favourites' on it, just a bog standard inbox, even less sophisticated than Hotmail. I do have a BT homepage but only check it for phone calls and BB usage now and again.

I see from today's Times that BT is to ditch Yahoo! "to launch its own internet service....The company will switch all of its six million email accounts to a new supplier - Critical Path - this year. It will rebrand the service BT Mail....".

So the thick plottens, as ff would say - I have BT Broadband which means BT Yahoo mail but for email only and I normally view email through Windows Mail only occasionally looking in the BT Yahoo! mailbox to see if anything is held up as spam. But like Anna no "Favourites".......

Make sure you use your email by logging on at bt.yahoo.com, using your computer email software (like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird) If you don't, we'll close the account and delete everything that goes with it - including your emails, contacts, calendar and notes. If we do close your account, you can still use the email address to log in to BT Wi-fi or other BT services. You just won't be able to use it for email.
So, it's back to Outlook Express for me or - ditch BT and switch to another ISP? How can they suddenly pull the plug on users?

They can't delete things that are on your own computer - like Richard I only go into the BTYahoo webmail site to see whather there is anything that has been filtered as spam but isn't - then I send it down on to my computer. If I send any email from webmail I try to remember to send myself a copy.

BT is closing email accounts which haven't been used for more than 150 days.

Exactly the same here.

(And some genuine messages do get put into the Spam folder up there in the BTYahoo mailbox, even though the spam filter is switched 'off', so it is worth having a look there every so often.)

So I don't understand Saly's problem, either. The recent scare email about losing your email account if you don't use it doesn't apply if your normal email reader, such as Outlook Express, checks the BTYahoo site every so often, as it normally must do.

We have a BT line, so I assume that they are the broadband provider. We also have an ISP (Internet Service Provider) who provide our email, but that's a bit complicated as our email domain name is from someone else. We access emails through Outlook. I've never heard of a BT email service.

When your ISP is BT, the BTYahoo mailbox is where your emails are stored, waiting for you to download them, typically by using a program like Outlook which does this automatically. But you can access the BTYahoo mailbox directly via the web, using your BT password. You might want to do this if you are away from home, in an internet cafe for example, to check your emails.

Also, as I said above, there may be genuine emails lurking there in the Spam folder, which would eventually disappear, never to be seen by you.

You presumably have a similar central mailbox with your own ISP, though you have never accessed it directly.

Well, this new regime seems to have taken over every corner of my computer. I spoke to a BT helpline who admitted they are having teething troubles; it should be settled in a few months,she said.

If it's a clue, my page is headed 'Windows Internet Explorer provided by BT Yahoo.

OK, thanks - I was thinking that perhaps something was happening 'behind the scenes' that I should know about. I'll keep calm & carry on. And avoid having BT as my isp.

If you have a BT line you pay extra for their internet service , including email (@btinternet.com or @ btopenworld.com) but you can opt to use another email service (e.g. gmail, hotmail or yahoo). I've never fully understood how the BT internet service/email works, but Don has now given me an inkling! Thanks!

So, to recap: I use both the BT email service and Questmail (for FoR3), and it's the email client on my computer (Mail for Mac in my case) that goes and seeks out the various accounts on btinternet.com and for3.org which my computer has been set up to receive? Is that right? I noticed last night that emails which had already been downloaded were still stored in the BTYahoo mailbox.

There you may have it! I've always avoided/refused any offer of someone's better addon toolbar, search engine, etc from the likes of Yahoo and Google. They only seem to give more complication than simplification.

Me too. I always used the Google toolbar, but recent versions of Firefox don't support it.
