    Bye bye Hotmail.......Hello Outlook.com

Why, oh why, can't IT companies give the option to continue to display stuff the old way whenever they introduce 'improvements'?

Apple iTunes 11, for example. The BBC/RAH proms website. Google's Search Results page. Radio 3 website.

And now, compulsorily migrated over to Outlook.com. The screen layout is awful...what is this obsession with massive and unnecessary amounts of white space? The chosen display font (which you cannot change) is really really difficult for someone like me to read. Very thin and spindly characters. Zooming in doesn't really help. The spacing between words is excessive and stops the natural flow when reading.

None of this can be changed.

Please tell me how as I can't find how to do it. You can change the font etc of outgoing messages but not the display of your emails or the main screen.

You can (if you can be bothered) use another mail client and get the hotmail sent there
so on a mac , macmail will collect several accounts in one place
        other options are available

having a quick look at this it seems obvious that they have tried to make an ultra simple interface ...... it all seems to be in Arial

How do you send hotmail (or get hotmail) from/into another mail client?

EDIT: Found it....well, you learn something everyday! Mind you, I'd rather keep my Hotmail account separate from my normal mail so I will give it a miss.

            It is entirely separate
given the amount of spam that hotmail gets (which is why many people have given up on it ) many folk have given up on it
though I sometimes use it for communicating with organisations that i'm not 100% sure wont sell on my details ......

I meant separate on my desktop. I take your point re selling on details.

But the OP does raise a moot point. Why do they feel the need to fiddle?

It's what they do! Some young and eager employee determined to rise in the hierarchy by impressing the boss so that they can stop working in the lower ranks. Never mind that they totally piss off everyone who actually uses the "service".

It's a bit like being Education Secretary.

I think some (but not all ) of this is a well thought out strategy
make something that is "free" so lots of people will use it and find that it works for them
then make a change to it as part of an "upgrade" that makes it fiddly or irritating (like Youtube and adverts etc) and charge people for having the original version without the irritating bits ......

Stalkerbook will do that soon and where will the BBC et al be without it ?

(it's how people sell drugs ........... cheap to start with, build up a dependence then crank up the price )

I hate the new layout as well...I filled out one of their feedback forms to tell them so. I doubt it will make the slightest bit of difference...
                    Best regards,

Another example - Safari on the iPad. It seems to me that the earlier versions were actually better, with a page showing a thumbnail of potential target pages.

I upgraded to v 5.1.1 and it seems to me that the interface has been downgraded. I'm not in a hurry to upgrade the other machine we have in our household - and after experiencing the 12 hours or so wait during the upgrade, and some loss of data - which I may or may not be able to get back, on my iPad, I have even less incentive than I'd anticipated.

Apple have buggered around with all sorts of things, esp iPhoto... There's all sort of bells and whistles now, something called 'Events' which you can't switch off, a more fiddly edit function. I had to go back to some photos on my old iMac running OS 10.4 - iPhoto is much easier to use, for my purposes at least. I suppose there's something to do with 'the system you first got to know' - but I find it genuinely far more user-friendly and less fussy.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

But on iPhoto I do love the Name identification system. They say it learns the faces, but still gives ludicrous results: A new picture of my (male) neighbour recently prompted the question "Is this Mum?"

No! It annoys the hell out of me!
