    I take your point and it may apply to most customers ! We don't necessarily let 'cheap' predicate purchasing decisions. It is an important purchase for us (OK...more for me that Mrs RM) as decent music to listen to while cooking is essential.

      The portability issue is the tricky one. I assume that it must have the speakers as well, since you want portability.
      I've seen some Bang & Olufsen stuff that might meet your needs, when I was in their shop by Herrods last fall. It was also networkable. It sounded great--like a high end piece of kit should, and not a boom box. It could probably be networked to work with your main system, so that you could use your main speakers when desired. I think it ran 600 pounds, and I believe that was over your budget, but perhaps you could check it out and see what you think, if for no other reason just to see what is possible fairly close to your price point.
